Liz Illg shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Liz, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My mornings start with coffee and cuddles with my furbabies—it’s the best way to ease into the day with some joy and calm. After that, I take a few minutes to map out my day, making sure my to-do list and projects are aligned with my calendar so I can stay focused and productive. Then, I head out for a 3-mile walk with my pups while wearing a weighted vest. Between that peaceful start and getting my body moving, that’s how I spend the first 90 minutes of my day—and it sets the tone for everything that follows.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Liz Illg, the founder of Puff and Fluff Grooming—your pet’s favorite place to get pampered! What started as a single shop with a big heart has grown into multiple locations across the Valley, all built around one mission: to provide exceptional care for pets and a positive experience for their humans.
At Puff and Fluff, we believe grooming should be stress-free, safe, and even fun. Our team is passionate, highly trained, and truly treats your pets like family. From luxury baths to breed-specific cuts, we take pride in creating a clean, calm, and loving environment for every furry guest that walks through our doors.
What makes us unique? We focus on community. Whether it’s hosting pet-friendly events, supporting local rescues, or simply remembering your pup’s name, we’re here to make you—and your pet—feel right at home.
Right now, we’re working on expanding our services and continuing to raise the bar for pet care in Arizona. It’s a joy to grow alongside the amazing pet parents who trust us every day!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One of the biggest moments that shaped how I see the world was taking a huge risk and buying my first grooming shop. At the time, I never imagined it would turn into what it is today—but I took the leap, trusted my gut, and went all in. That decision not only changed the course of my life, but also taught me that big growth often starts with bold moves. Now, with multiple Puff and Fluff locations across the Phoenix area, I’m constantly reminded that believing in yourself—and taking that first step—can open doors you never thought possible.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Dream big, think big, and act big.
Dream big: Allow yourself to imagine a life beyond what feels possible. Don’t limit your goals based on where you are now—envision the life you truly want, even if it feels out of reach.
Think big: Approach life with a mindset of abundance and possibility. Challenge your fears, question limits, and believe that there’s always a way forward if you stay curious and open.
Act big: Take bold, intentional action. Don’t wait until everything is perfect—start before you’re ready. Confidence comes through doing, and progress happens when you’re willing to take up space and go all in.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the pet industry is that you have to “do it all” to stay competitive—boarding, training, daycare, grooming, retail… the list goes on. There’s this pressure to expand into every possible service to keep up, but I don’t buy into that.
At Puff and Fluff, we know what we do best: grooming. That’s our focus, and we’ve worked hard to master it. We don’t dilute our energy by chasing every trend or trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, we stay in our lane, deliver exceptional service, and create an experience that pets and their owners truly love.
Sometimes saying no is the smartest move you can make—because it allows you to go deeper, not just wider. That’s where excellence lives.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
A big part of my success comes down to one thing: building processes. A lot of business owners don’t realize how transformational it is to create clear systems. It’s not just about making things more efficient—it’s about completely changing how you interact with your business.
When you build strong processes, you create consistency, clarity, and confidence—for yourself and your team. You’re no longer stuck in the day-to-day because the systems run the business, and your people feel empowered to step up and succeed. It’s one of the most overlooked keys to sustainable growth.
