Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Zarate.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Yvette. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hello, I’m from Tucson AZ born and raised. As a young girl, I had so many different dreams and one that always stuck was the beauty. At the age of 15, I became a mother and, of course, I sure wasn’t ready. I was always looked down upon because of being a teen mom and was told by people I thought cared for me that I was going to be nothing. All the negativity I turned to strength and made sure to do right by myself and especially my son. With juggling two part-time jobs, high school and a baby, I still enrolled into a cosmetology program, I thought could change my life but never thought I’d get the chance to actually be part of it. As I was so focused on graduating high school, one day, I received a call saying I was chosen for a 22 thousand dollar scholarship that would cover all my cosmetology school expenses. This call has changed my life is such a wonderful way. I’m now 24 years old and have been in the hair industry for going on six years. March of 2018, I became a Salon Owner of Beauty By Yvette which has been amazing to see how far I’ve come.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s hard to say but for sure, it wasn’t easy. From finding the right salon, which I’ve worked at four different salons before owning my studio. You have to make sure you’re in an environment where everyone is cheering for each other and sadly very early, I witnessed how some people can be in the industry but I didn’t let that stop me. I took every bad situation that I either was part of or witnessed and turned it into a positive outcome. It showed me how to be a better stylist, person and learned that, at the end of the day, I was what made my brand no one else. My advice would be to never give up and never compare yourself, everyone’s time will come and you just need to focus on yours. As long as you believe in yourself, that’s all you need.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty By Yvette – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Some of the work I do varies from color, cuts, extensions and waxing services. What I specialize in is color, color correction, fantasy color and the new techniques of balayage, foilayage and color melts. I would say I’m mostly known for my color corrections. I love the challenge and seeing that im capable to give my guest such a dramatic change. What I’m most proud of is that even though the changes of salons, trial, and errors and learning how to master the techniques (even though I’m always learning), I’m blessed to have such a loyal clientele. Most of my clients have literally been with me since my first day on the floor in beauty school to now me owning my salon. What this has shown me is no matter how far I’ve come in the industry, my guest has now become family and support me through thick and thin. I’ve never changed the person I am no matter how much I’ve grown and I think that’s very important because, without my clients, I wouldn’t be the stylist I am today.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I think finding a mentor who fits your personality and the way you work is very important. Social media is huge nowadays and the industry has so much talent, but finding a mentor has helped me not only better my brand, but get the confidence I need to make changes, learn and be more successful.
