Life & Work with Tina Newton of Phoenix / Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Newton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Safety Babes Keychains began with one simple belief: everyone deserves access to real, reliable safety tools without the inflated price tag. When I first started researching what was available, I was shocked by how many businesses were charging premium prices for products that weren’t built to last. I knew people deserved better — and I knew I could create it.

My own life has had more than its share of scary moments, and those experiences shaped everything. They taught me how quickly a normal day can turn into something dangerous, and how important it is to feel prepared. Safety Babes Keychains became my way of turning fear into purpose — a way to protect not just myself, but the people around me.

What I never expected was how many people would open their hearts to me along the way. Over the years, customers have shared their stories — their close calls, their trauma, their victories, their healing. They’ve trusted me with some of the most personal moments of their lives. I cherish that confidence deeply. It reminds me every day why this work matters and why I’m committed to keeping quality, affordability, and empowerment at the center of everything I do.

Five years later, Safety Babes Keychains has grown into a community — one built on strength, compassion, and the belief that everyone deserves to feel safe.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. One of my biggest challenges has been navigating the world of pop‑up events and conventions. I love being part of community markets — meeting people face‑to‑face, hearing their stories, and helping them build safety keychains that make them feel more confident. But not every event welcomes what I do.

Even though I follow strict safety protocols and bring only legal, compliant products, some organizers still label my items as “weapons” and choose not to allow me in their spaces. In 2026 alone, more than four events I’ve attended for years told me my products were no longer welcome. It’s frustrating, especially because my mission is empowerment and protection — not harm.

I’m learning to navigate these barriers with patience and creativity. Every challenge pushes me to find new ways to show people that safety tools aren’t dangerous — they’re necessary. And every time a customer tells me they feel safer because of something they bought from me, it reminds me why I keep going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Safety Babes Keychains is more than a business — it’s a community built on empowerment, education, and genuine care. I specialize in creating high‑quality, customizable self‑defense keychains, and one of the things that sets my brand apart is that many of the wristlets I offer are handmade by other small businesses. Supporting fellow makers is important to me; when one of us grows, we all grow.

Education is at the heart of everything I do. I don’t just sell safety tools — I teach people how to use them properly and how to choose materials that will actually protect them in real‑world situations. I love doing this whether someone buys from me or not. Safety should never be gatekept, and I’m proud that my booth has become a place where people feel comfortable asking questions, learning, and gaining confidence.

One of my favorite parts of this journey happens at events. I’ll be working a booth and suddenly hear someone yell “the keychain lady!” as they run over to show me what they bought from me months or even years ago. Those moments remind me that my brand has become recognizable, trusted, and loved — not just for the products, but for the connection behind them.

What I want readers to know is simple: Safety Babes Keychains is built with intention. Every product, every conversation, every event is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and seen.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can support Safety Babes Keychains in so many meaningful ways. The simplest is to reach out — I love connecting with customers, creators, and anyone passionate about safety and community. You can shop with me, share my brand with friends, or invite me to collaborate at events, markets, or pop‑ups.

Most importantly, protect yourself. Whether you buy from me or someone else, choosing to carry proper safety tools and learning how to use them is a powerful form of self‑care. Every person who invests in their own safety becomes part of the mission.
