Life & Work with Timothy Beaubien of Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Beaubien.

Hi Timothy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My wife Barb and myself had been Michigan natives for 60 plus years. We had a second home here in Mesa for about 20. We were never smart enough to be snowbirds, but came out often. Every time we are heading back home, the same question was asked, how are we going to get out here and stay here?
We have now been in Mesa owning Hava Java for 3 full years. That all started at the end of covid. We had been looking for our next business opportunity for awhile. Barb and I had been in the motorcycle business for about twenty years, Barb was also a top producing realtor and my career was centered around Detroit automotive machine tool industry. It was time for a change. So we had been looking at opening a coffee shop in Michigan. But we wanted one with a liquor license. So at the end of covid we are in the Mesa house and I saw an article about the new coffee shop just down the street form us. We stopped in one Friday night for their live music. I had already been coming by for my morning coffee and loved the place. I told Barb, “this is exactly what we want to do in Michigan”. Anyway, on that Friday night visit I recognized the owner from his picture in the paper. and called him over to say how much we liked his coffee shop. That simple act started a conversation and six months later we owned Hava Java Mesa. We are now full time AZ residents

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any business is never a smooth road. I’ve been telling people for over 20 years, “you have to live thru it to believe it”. However all business have the same common dominator. It doesn’t matter if your selling machine tools, coffee or shoe laces, you must have the best product at a fair price with best service possible.
Finding quality people is always the struggle. This is a constant challenge. But they are out there, you just have to keep looking.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Hava Java Mesa is an old school community based coffee house with a difference. You can start and end your day here. We have created a warm and comfortable environment where you can come in and study, work or meet up with friends for a coffee drink, some wine, cold beer or one of our specialty cocktails.
Live music every Friday night, a monthly open mic and many other special events.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
No risk no reward. Safe roads lead to safe places with little rewards. All businesses are risky, if you cant tolerate risk, stay home.
