Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Sturgill.
Hi Steve, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love of photography began when I moved to Arizona in 1999. You learn to truly appreciate the beauty of nature when you are surrounded by the spectacular scenery in Sedona, Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon, and Saguaro National Park. I recall purchasing a Canon Rebel before my first trip to the Grand Canyon. My hope was to take a part of this incredible wonder of nature home with me.
As with most artists, I was influenced by many of the great photographers of yesterday and today. Among them are, Ansel Adams, Thomas Mangelsen, and Peter Lik. Each of these artists has the incredible ability to replicate the beauty of nature through their camera. This is what I strive for – to bring you as close as possible to the feeling of actually being there.
Moving back to the Midwest in 2003, along with a trip to Italy, helped me realize that there is natural beauty in every corner of the world and that we must take the time to appreciate it. I find myself once again a desert dweller and am finding new places to explore and photograph. I hope my photos encourage others to get out and see this beautiful world that we live in.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As a part-time landscape photographer, it is challenging to find the time to dedicate to doing what I love the most.
Commitments to my career have put my passion for photography in the back seat from time to time. I have to remind myself that making time to do what I love translates to me being happier in all facets of my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love the outdoors, and being a landscape and nature photographer helps connect me with the world we live in. I have traveled to many of the iconic natural sites across North America, but find the simple pleasures of the small things just as rewarding.
I specialize in landscape photography and try to capture the true essence of the location I am in. I am most proud of my work when my photos are on display and someone tells me how beautiful the shot is and how special that location is to them personally. That is when I know that I have truly connected my work to the viewer.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Before I take any shot, I sit back, take a deep breath of the fresh air, and observe everything about the scene.
A fallen leaf in fall, a colorful rock on the shoreline, patterns in the sky…it all helps me take in the beauty of nature.
And when I process my digital files and realize I capture the true essence of the scene…I am truly happy.
