Life & Work with Stephanie Yampolsky of Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Yampolsky.

Hi Stephanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey with Desert Stages Theatre began in the summer of 2002, when my daughter, Jordan, attended her first camp at just six years old. She had such an incredible experience that she wanted to audition for the next show. I asked my son, Jeremy, if he’d like to audition as well, since he had been enjoying another children’s program, Do Re Mi. To my surprise, both Jordan and Jeremy were cast in Peter Pan—and they were hooked!

I quickly found myself hooked too, volunteering as a backstage mom, usher, and summer camp helper. I watched Desert Stages teach my children skills that went far beyond theatre—confidence, teamwork, memorization, relationship-building, and public speaking. Before long, my youngest, Jack, joined the stage as well. I was grateful that all three of my kids had something so meaningful to share, and I still thank Desert Stages for the closeness it built among them.

Wanting to give back, I dove deeper—helping with costuming, the box office, and serving as parent liaison. Through this work, I developed a special friendship with co-founder Laurie Cullity, whose love for my kids as well as all kids was unmatched. When Laurie asked me to serve as business manager, I couldn’t say no. After Laurie’s retirement in 2020—and her passing in 2022—I felt her absence deeply. Though I stepped away from my role, I continued to support the theatre community and the countless children I had met during my 18 years involved in community theatre.

In December 2022, the Desert Stages Board of Directors approached me about guiding the theatre into its next chapter—restoring the heart and spirit that had meant so much to my family and me. Searching for my own renewed sense of purpose, I accepted. In January 2023, I became Executive Director of Desert Stages Theatre.

My hope is simple: to have the same impact on today’s kids, teens, and families that Desert Stages had on mine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t been easy, and the challenges aren’t getting any smaller. We had to leave our beloved space in Scottsdale Fashion Square because the rent and operating expenses were too high to sustain. While the Valley’s thriving theater scene is wonderful for actors, creative teams, and audiences, it also makes it harder for Desert Stages to stand out and raise the funds needed to continue our mission. Funding for the arts is increasingly limited, and grants are more competitive than ever.

Despite these obstacles, we are moving forward with determination. We have launched a Capital Campaign to raise the funds necessary to open a new, permanent home for Desert Stages—a space where young performers, directors, and choreographers can continue to grow, thrive, and share their talents with our community.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Desert Stages Theatre, we believe theatre is for everyone—and for every stage of life. The word “Stages” in our name doesn’t just refer to the physical stage; it represents the many stages of growth, discovery, and creativity that people experience both on and off stage. Whether you are performing under the lights, designing sets, directing, or choreographing, Desert Stages is a place where everyone can learn, grow, and belong.

From the beginning, Desert Stages was built as a theatre in the round—a unique and intimate way to experience storytelling. I am passionate about bringing that back, because a theatre in the round challenges actors, designers, and directors to see things from every perspective. It teaches flexibility, creativity, and awareness—skills that extend far beyond theatre.

One of the things I am most proud of is our summer camp program. We’ve created an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and full of joy. Whether a camper is brand new to musical theatre or has years of experience, they will learn something valuable and meaningful. What makes our camp especially powerful is that many of our counselors are older Desert Stages actors, eager to mentor the younger generation. Their passion, commitment, and energy ensure every camper feels supported and inspired.

What truly sets Desert Stages apart is our heart. We are not just a theatre—we are a family. When you step through our doors, you become part of the DST family forever. Generations of performers, parents, and volunteers have built lasting relationships here, and that sense of belonging continues to guide everything we do.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to be a theatre for all ages, for all stages, and for all people who want to experience the magic of theatre—whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are so many ways to get involved with Desert Stages Theatre, and we truly value the support of our community. Volunteers are always welcome—whether it’s building and painting sets, helping with costumes, ushering at performances, or assisting with fundraising efforts. Every helping hand makes a difference in keeping our theatre thriving.

Of course, one of the most impactful ways to support us is through financial contributions. Donations—whether personal or through a business—allow us to continue creating opportunities for performers of all ages and to keep theatre accessible for everyone.

We are also eager to collaborate with other nonprofits. Theatre is a powerful way to shine a light on important issues, and we believe in partnering with organizations whose missions align with the themes of our shows. For example, if a production explores the topic of bullying, we would love to partner with a local nonprofit that supports children in that way. Together, we can raise awareness, raise funds, and create meaningful connections that extend beyond the stage.

At Desert Stages, every act of support—whether time, talent, or treasure—helps us continue to be a theatre for all ages, all stages, and all stories.
