Life & Work with Stephanie Nault

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Nault.

Stephanie Nault

Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started in the beauty industry over 20 years ago in Michigan. The surprising reason I began was because I needed a job. I was looking for work, and a fellow college student suggested that Marshall Fields (which would later become Macy’s) was hiring in the cosmetics department. I had not done makeup on anyone but myself prior to walking into the interview. I was terrified, but I showed up and took the process step by step.

By the end of the day, I was hired at the Stila Cosmetics counter. From there in my career, I would work for MAC Cosmetics and Hourglass as well as working part time for several other cosmetics lines. I loved learning about how each brand had a “look” and the tips and tricks used to achieve that. Once moving to Arizona from Michigan, I started working, again, for Stila Cosmetics as a freelance artist and worked my way up to an Account Executive position. Throughout my time working with the cosmetics lines, I continued to build my own personal freelance wedding, special event and photo shoot makeup clientele and referral base.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always going to be challenges. Learning to take a deep breath and looking at the issue from another perspective has helped me along this path. That in itself has been a learning lesson: how to navigate the less-than-perfect. One challenge for me has been learning what the best areas of investment will be for my business. I have learned some of those lessons the hard way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup artist known for my “kicked-up natural look.” I love that I have embraced the type of makeup I like to do and focused on bettering my skills within that genre. Bringing out your personal features and bringing your best face forward is always my ultimate goal. In a world of social media where being caked, baked, and “unnatural” is popular, I aim to do the opposite of that. Let me help you embrace where you are right now and enhance your beauty.

How do you define success?
The older I get, the more this definition changes. Success to me is the joy of creativity and stability. The process of creating looks from start to finish and learning more about each of my clients brings me deep joy.

I truly love it when I book a wedding party for makeup, a client sets up a glam session for a photo shoot, or I am booked for special event hair and makeup. When clients rebook and allow me to be a part of their journey means so much. Stability comes from the peace of mind of booking appointments and the ability to continue to share my creative process.
