Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up I always had disposable camera in hand. Whether it was at school, at parties, or just hanging out you could count on me taking pictures of everyone. Years later, after my daughter was born, I knew I needed to invest in a good camera to pictures of my precious girl and all her milestones. Slowly friends started asking me to take their pictures, then friends of friends, and before I knew it, I had a nice little side gig going. It wasn’t until I decided to get divorced, I had a choice to make. Going from a stay-at-home mom back to the work world I knew I needed something that could support my two kids. Do I venture out and try working a typical 9-5 or do I take the biggest leap of faith and take up photography full time?
3 wonderful years later I’m happy to say that I chose photography and have never looked back.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, to say the least. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to be a small business owner as well as a creatively driven one at that. Late nights, mom guilt, taxed creative juices, and crazy schedules not to mention the dreaded imposter syndrome. It’s a daily struggle to balance it all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in wedding and editorial photography. I’m driven by romance and capturing it in an uncontrived way. I often joke that my style is “bright + moody”. I think that’s what sets me apart from most. In the photography spectrum, I’m almost dead center. I want to see true skin tones and details on dresses all while capturing candid moments that people can feel through an image.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
As silly as it sounds, the most important lesson I’ve learned is to believe in myself and my abilities. Comparison to other creatives will drain you and make you think you’re unworthy.
