Life & Work with Roanna Seekings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roanna Seekings.

Hi Roanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
That’s such a big question! 🙂 I am where I am today because of the community around me, past and present. Every part of my journey has been supported and encouraged by those around me, whether humoring my endless drawings of horses, hands, dream houses, and make-up makeovers of the models in my big sister’s fashion magazines when I was a child to the likes, follows, shares, purchases, commissions, connections and feedback from peers, mates, family, tutors, and randomers today. These guys help me exist here, plus a shit ton of hard graft, sweat, tears, and joy at my end. I also do it because I need to; I can’t imagine a life not realizing the endless images of thoughts floating in my head; you have to get them out into reality so you can stop thinking about them, haha, before moving on to the next ones!

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Haha, is there a smooth road to anything? Life throws obstacles; sometimes, these fuel my creativity, and sometimes they slow it down. On a technical level, some of the challenges I’ve faced have been learning new skills and making myself a beginner all over again, repeatedly trying to grow—a purposeful struggle. Recently, I’ve been developing my EA garmz, which started as screen printing and embroidering onto wholesale grams, but my ideas have expanded bigger than my boots. Now I want to produce a game from scratch. I’ve spent the last few weeks designing tech packs for my new collection, half of which was researching what they were and what goes in them! I didn’t want to outsource when I knew I had the skills to get there myself, even if it meant more work, which it was! But I’ve learned so much and can confidently say it’s another thing to add to my creative repertoire; it feels good to know new sh*t! I’m never bored, haha!

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I’m a multidisciplinary artist and brand owner! I’m known for my EA garmz, signature black and white line work, and my obsession with drawing hands. That could be what sets me apart. Who else loves reppin’ East Anglia like me and my banging community of EA legends donning a particular hand gesture on their wearz, haha?! It’s true, though. We’ve created a community that doesn’t just celebrate being from a specific locality but what it means to be connected to it, whether it’s passing through, knowing someone from here, or living here. Its a reflection of how our roots can be interchangeable depending on the connections we make as we migrate, whether permanent resettlement or a weekend in the fields, warehouses, and concrete streets of the EA rave scene, all the while still belonging; it’s a state [of mind] :). That’s my work; my brand, drawing, and painting reflect my curiosity about belonging, identity, and having a sense of place.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I’ve never been! It’s a bucket list dream, but my piggy bank has yet to stretch that far! But I would love to see the sunset at Venice Beach! That would be mega and I’d have to throw some EA stickers down on the stars of the Hollywood Walk of Fame 😉 And eat everything!
