Life & Work with Phylisha Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phylisha Thompson.

Hi Phylisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I created Phylisha’s Corner because of the mental health issues I have. I want to encourage people battling depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, domestic violence, infertility, loneliness, or even addiction to seek help. Reach out to a licensed therapist and know it’s okay to not be okay all the time. I want to encourage everyone to speak up if they are struggling with something because chances are the person they talk to can relate or may even be able to provide guidance. I know many people think therapy will not help or that they do not have the time to do it, but it will and does. I also want to encourage African Americans to start going to therapy and know it is okay! Sometimes we have to write things down to begin to be healthy.

Mental health is something many of us put on the back burner until it is too late. Also, people in a domestic violence relationship sometimes do not know how to get out or are scared to leave their abuser and wait then it is too late. My ask is that everyone who purchases my journals or some call them notebooks call a therapist and talk about whatever it is they need to talk about and let it out. I want to encourage healing and growth. I want to encourage others that are in a domestic violence situation to get out of if they do not know where to go or have nowhere to go look up the closest domestic violence shelter. Let’s start putting our mental health and lives first. Let’s start living the lives we should be living. And seek therapy! All my journals have the hotlines listed from the domestic violence hotline to the substance abuse hotline. We do not have to stay in this struggle. We are not alone in this fight.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My creations have been a smooth ride because every journal I have created comes from my heart. The ride is a little rocky because I am working on advertising and getting my name out there.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have created mental health awareness journals some call them notebooks.

I am different than anyone else because I want people to heal from the trauma they have endured. I encourage life, light, and love. I also donate journals to domestic violence shelters, hospitals, and schools.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
My husband David Dukes. Everything I have written I ask him for his advice and then decides whether to take it or not. I stay up late some nights creating and he is right there supporting me. Letting me know how my light will change and touch the world one day. My husband lets everyone know my name and passes out all my flyers and business cards. His dedication journal is on Amazon called Black King Journal

My cousin/ friend Chad Thompson. There is not a day that goes by that he doesn’t let me know how happy he is for me. He wants to see me win and the constant support he gives me is endless. He is one of my biggest supporters. We met in 2016 and have been glued at the hip ever since.

My bestie Greg Dykas for helping with my name. And has been by my side since 2005. There is a journal dedicated to him on Amazon called I Don’t Give an Eeffoc Until I had my Coffee.

My other bestie Jarred Chatman is my constant cheerleader and loves me to the moon and back.

My bestie Simone, I love hearing her say I love it even if something I made is ugly. She continues to give me advice even if I don’t want to hear it. Her dedication journal is on Amazon called Different is Beautiful: Mental Health Awareness Journal.

My brother Maurice. This man will support me through the good the bad and the ugly. If it is good I’m getting a call from him and if is bad I’m getting a call from him telling me what to change. He’s an Aquarius and things have to be perfect.

My cousins Troy, Allysa, and Adriana Landrum I can always count on to let me know if my projects are nice.

My God kids’ mom Gina! She encouraged me to write her dedication journal now on Amazon called Sunflower Journal for Happy Thoughts. She gives me light and encouragement to do better and be better.

My thank you is to my auntie! Dr. Thelma L. Landrum PHD mental health counselor. I have watched you all my life. You helped welcome me in this world with your baby sister my mom Peggy Thompson. You loved me and molded me in ways you have encouraged me to follow my heart. Your footsteps I have always wanted to follow and I am so grateful for everything you have done for me. You are my person and I love you so much!
To close my thank you’s is to my mom Peggy Ann Thompson. You gave me the gift of life and endless love and encouragement. Even when you could understand me or my mind you still said “baby you will change the world, but make sure to get rest”. I can’t thank you enough for loving me and treating me as your number 1 because I was your only one. My heart breaks everyday because you are not here with me to see all my accomplishments. You knew I was going to be great and graduate from college. I hate you missed it but I feel you everyday day by my side. I love you mom and miss you so much. You baby is trying to change the world and I hope you are smiling at me. I love you.

I can’t name everyone or else I would be here all day.
