Today we’d like to introduce you to Ozlem Yeni
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with Voyage Phoenix. My journey as an artist began in my childhood in Turkey. From a young age, I found great joy and comfort in painting. Art became a language for me—a way to express my feelings and thoughts when words were not enough. This passion for creativity led me to pursue a formal education in the arts. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Honors) in painting and later a Master’s and Ph.D. in Theatre Stage Design and Construction.
After my studies, I dedicated 18 years to academia as a lecturer in Theatre Stage Design in Turkey. Teaching was a rewarding experience that deepened my understanding of art and allowed me to inspire a new generation of artists. My journey as an artist has also taken me across the globe, with my work being featured in solo and group exhibitions in Turkey, Japan, Australia, Albania, and beyond. My artworks are part of private collections in Europe, Turkey, Australia, and South East Asia, reflecting the diverse appeal and reach of my creative expression.
In 2015, I moved to Australia, where I continued to grow as an artist. I opened “The Main Gallery” in Adelaide, the first gallery established by a Turkish artist in Australia. This venture allowed me to connect with a diverse range of artists and audiences, further shaping my artistic identity and expanding my creative horizons.
Recently, I relocated to Arizona, USA, marking a new chapter in my life filled with excitement and opportunity. My husband and I decided to move here to explore new artistic landscapes and engage with the vibrant art community in Phoenix. I am eager to share my experiences, learn from other artists, and contribute to the local art scene.
Looking back, my journey has been shaped by a deep passion for art and a commitment to using creativity as a tool for connection and transformation. I believe that art has the power to bridge gaps between cultures and bring people together, and I am thrilled to continue this journey here in Arizona.
Thank you for allowing me to share my story!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been entirely smooth, as moving to a new place always comes with its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles has been that I don’t know anyone in Arizona yet, and building new connections takes time. As an outgoing artist, not knowing anyone in a new city is certainly challenging. However, I am not a shy person, and I welcome the challenges that come with making such a big move across the globe from Australia.
Another unexpected challenge has been adjusting to the hot summer season here—let’s just say it was a lovely surprise! Luckily, it’s a dry heat, which makes it a bit more manageable.
Aside from these two challenges, the transition has been relatively smooth. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed discovering the local art scene, attending festivals, and exploring the beautiful nature around Arizona. The food and entertainment options are fantastic, and I am excited to continue exploring all that this vibrant state has to offer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am deeply passionate about exploring the human experience through my art. At the core of my artistic journey is a desire to unravel the intricate tapestry of individual narratives. My work seeks to transcend the boundaries of gender, age, religion, and nationality, offering a space where universal truths can be reflected and shared. Each canvas I create becomes a mirror, inviting viewers to engage with their own stories and aspirations, to find common ground in our shared humanity.
I view my art as an ongoing odyssey of self-discovery and connection. Every stroke of my brush is a step in this journey, a quest to understand not only myself but also the world around me. Through my paintings, I hope to foster a sense of introspection and dialogue, encouraging people to explore their own identities and connections to others.
What sets my work apart is this commitment to distilling complexity into clarity. I believe that art has the power to simplify the complexities of existence, making it accessible and relatable. It is this journey of exploring identity, finding connection, and celebrating our shared human experience that drives my creative process.
I am most proud of how my work has been able to touch lives across different cultures and backgrounds. Whether through exhibitions in Turkey, Australia, Japan, Albania, or now here in Arizona, my goal remains the same: to create art that resonates with people, that sparks conversations, and that inspires a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other.
Ultimately, my work is driven by a passion for art’s ability to inspire, heal, and bring people together. As I settle into this new chapter in Arizona, I am excited to continue exploring new artistic landscapes and contributing to the vibrant art community here.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking to the future, I am particularly excited about a few key projects that align with my passion for art and community engagement. One of my most significant goals is to establish an Art Foundation. This foundation will provide a platform for young and emerging artists, offering them education, resources, and opportunities to develop their talents. I believe in the transformative power of art and aim to create a space where creativity can flourish and inspire positive change.
The foundation will be more than just a support network for artists; it will be a place to foster dialogue, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose among artists from diverse backgrounds. My hope is to cultivate a new generation of artists who are not only skilled in their craft but also committed to making a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
Additionally, I am looking forward to deepening my engagement with the local art scene. I plan to participate in various festivals and community projects, and to continue building connections with fellow artists. I’m also eager to explore new themes in my work, particularly those related to identity, connection, and the human experience.
I’m enthusiastic about the road ahead and the potential to contribute to a vibrant, inclusive artistic community. I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that will come with this next chapter.
