Life & Work with Old Knives of Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Old Knives.

Old Knives

Hi Old Knives, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Gus, Cliff, and I (Ray) have been playing in bands together since high school. After playing together in various projects from 2007-2012, we took some years away and finally had to get a project going again around 2018. Gus and I began working on songs around 2019, and after we felt ready to get things going more officially, we invited Cliff to join in. We had our first shows/recordings happening in 2023.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been pretty great because we are actually best friends outside of the band. The only hiccup we have faced is having to move forward without our original bassist, Marc but we love him and we are excited to keep moving ahead with our newest member, Jesse who taking his place.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We make alternative/indie/rock music that pulls from a lot of influences. We kinda like to think that we don’t fit into any exact genre, and this helps us to feel comfortable writing songs that can be pretty different from one to the next. Only having been a band for a little over a year, it’s hard to define what we are known for. But we always have a good time at our shows and crowds have responded well to our music, energy, and occasional silliness.

We take a lot of pride in our songwriting, we’re really setting out to give listeners something different from the norm while maintaining bits of pop in the music. Above all, This band is about making music we like with our friends. When people like what we’re doing, it is a huge bonus that gives us a drive to keep going and trying to push our boundaries.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
We are super thankful to the local promoters and venues who have invited us to play, Larry from Mind’s Eye recording studio who is amazing to work with and has worked on all of our released music thus far, Alex Gold (5th Reel photography, Desert Sounds Magazine) for his top tier photos/journalism and genuine support for the local music scene, Jacob from Dad Life Visual Media for filming and editing our most recent music video, and Electric Bat Arcade for allowing us to shoot in their location.

Massive thanks also to anyone that has come out to see us play or streamed our music, it really means the world to us.
