Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Scott.
Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Sure! Well, it’s difficult to know where to start – I’ve been sketching, painting, and watching movies for as long as I can remember. My early fascination with those art forms really worked to ignite my interest in any and all content that required creative energy or imagination.
Some of my fondest memories are from working on the Drama production teams at my High School and working with my friends to create sets and get them all built and painted in time for our “Curtain’s up!” call. One of my first jobs was working in my mother’s wedding photography business as her resident candid photographer. I don’t think I fully realized it at the time but that was such a crucial introduction for me to a whole new way of seeing and capturing the world around me – it laid a lot of that foundational groundwork that fueled the fires of inspiration for projects that came later. There are so many parallels/crossovers between photo composition and composing film scenes/sequences, so my ease into small film production projects felt pretty seamless. I have had opportunities to work on teams and individually with all sorts of systems, including Arri, Leica, Canon, Nikon, etc., and continue to look for opportunities to collaborate in that space! I feel like I always learn something new from each job.
The last couple of years have felt like a whirlwind of activity for me, so much so, I decided to finally get my ducks in a row and start up a business, Nat’s Workshop of Wonders, focused on the creative projects that have kept coming across my desk, whether they be painting projects, photo opportunities, or working on small films!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
You know, I think my biggest obstacle is probably the best one to have. In addition to my interests in visual arts, I also have a career in driving geospatial technology solutions as a software engineering project lead.
Sustainability, conservation, and the use of digital cartographic (GIS) systems are all topics and tools that have held my focus for the bulk of my career in tech. There just aren’t enough hours in the day!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The paintings I create typically include subjects that hold my interest – anything from abstract images to fantasy series’/shows that serve as inspiration. I use those opportunities to paint “experimentally” with new tools that I typically improvise on the fly, beyond using traditional brushes. I’ve shown/sold several of these paintings in group art shows in Downtown Phoenix previously!
The photographs I take seek to capture images of the world around us as seen through the lens of someone who has been fortunate enough to travel to some very beautiful locations. We all seek refuge in very different ways and sometimes those journeys take us to unique locations. I strive to occupy those spaces and photograph them in a way that shows that there is beauty to be found in everything. I find the same principles have driven me to participate in the film projects I have taken on thus far as well – it’s all a matter of seeing different perspectives, telling compelling stories, and having a little fun along the way.
I believe if there is one thing that sets my creations and projects apart from others, it’s that I’ll always put the highest level of quality into my work. I seek to create to bring joy to others and, in so doing, to myself.
