Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Leal
Natalie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in California and was raised by a single father, My dad taught me how to be self sufficient and how to do things most women don’t know how to do. I was always supported and encouraged to try new things. Whether it was things like photography or ceramics, I always had creative ideas.
One day in 2020, I was at my favorite store (HOME DEPOT) and saw a picture of a wine barrel that was made into a pet bed. I immediately wanted one and thought to myself, I can make that. I bought a half barrel and my passion began, My very first barrel bed wasn’t very pretty and was stained all one color: Immediately after making the first one, my brain was in overdrive and flowing with ideas.
I made about a half dozen beds and no two were alike. I started participating in local craft fairs to get the word out about my pet beds.
In 2021, I was winding down a 27 year career in law enforcement. Unfortunately I was injured and required major neck surgery. In November of 2022, I was medically retired and moved to Prescott Valley, Az to start the next chapter of my life.
It took me about a year to acclimate and get adjusted to retired life. Early this year, I began advertising a couple of beds on Facebook market place. I was contacted by a couple in Chino Valley who bought one bed and immediately told me they wanted a custom law enforcement themed bed. This was the push and inspiration I had been looking for: I created my very first thin blue line bed for my new friend and retired police chief:
Almost immediately after completing this custom bed, I was contacted by the owner of a new unique furniture store who was interested in selling my beds in her store.
My days now are split between my two passions, training at the gym and designing one of a kind beds for as many spoiled pets as I can.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been rough adjusting to a new city where I don’t know many people. Along with a new city comes new rules, laws and such to run a business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make custom pet beds out of used/ recycled wine or whiskey barrels. No two beds are alike since each barrel is used differently and are made from different woods. I like to learn about my clients and design a bed that suits their taste and decor.
