Life & Work with Morayma Makay of Litchfield Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morayma Makay.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to the Buckeye/Litchfield Park area of Arizona four years ago after spending over a year researching the best places in the US to move to with my children. We were living in Southern California and between the cost of living and extended school closures beginning in 2020, I knew it was time to start a new chapter in a new hometown. At the time, I was working three jobs and saving every penny to make this new adventure a reality for us. I was working for the local school district, writing content for a variety of client websites, and as a relocation consultant for an international corporate relocation company. My relocation skills helped me hone in on the perfect new city for my family, and within three months of deciding where we wanted to live, we were crossing state lines to start our new lives. Starting over was both exciting and a bit daunting. I had to give up my beloved job with the school district, but was fortunate to be able to continue telecommuting as a relocation consultant. I also began creating my own written and video content sharing my experiences as a mother, former model, and natural aging advocate all while managing motherhood in a new city on my own as my husband had to stay behind in California for work. Luckily my kids had no issues assimilating to their new high school, and I was able to focus on work and creating a comfortable and welcoming new home for them. Over the past four years, I have continued to build my brand as an over 40, and now over 50, creator helping other women feel seen and heard in their motherhood and midlife journeys, as well as advocating for healthy and natural aging in a world where social media and reality TV has created an unrealistic and unattainable beauty standard for women in midlife. Now that both of my kids are in college, I am a newly minted empty nester, and am looking forward to spending even more time expanding my brand and content on my blog and YouTube channel. I have always felt that if my stories can help even just one other woman feel seen and heard, then all the work I put in to my writing and videos is worth its weight in gold!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I look at the big picture, I feel blessed that the road to where I am now seems relatively smooth in hindsight. Everything has a way of falling into place, and I like to remind myself of that when I become stressed or anxious. I definitely had to work hard to get to where I am in every way…and I continue to work very hard on a daily basis, but it’s all of those small steps that have led to smooth leaps. Prior to moving to Arizona, I had no idea how we were going to make the move a reality since we didn’t own a home to sell, and the pandemic had significantly cut down on work for both my husband and I. My kids were struggling after being locked down so long, and it was just a very difficult time for everyone in general. I just had to keep my nose to the grindstone and have faith that things would work out if I kept pushing forward. There were days that would find me completely overwhelmed and doubting myself, but I kept going…and am so glad that I did. Now that I am working on my brand and content creation, I can also tend to feel overwhelmed or doubt my abilities…learning all of the ins and outs of using social media and “putting myself out there” are definitely out of my comfort zone, but then I’ll get a comment or message from someone who I’ve helped via a video or blog post and I realize that I’m on the right path.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have always loved the written word…both as a reader and a writer. I have worked as a ghost writer for a wide range of clients creating newsletter articles, blog posts, and books, since my children were babies (now 18 and 21 years old!). About 8 years ago I decided to sit down and write my father’s biography in blog form, and that in turn inspired me to begin my own blog, Adulthood Rewired. In my blog, I share my stories about the insanity of being an adult, motherhood, and how to stay healthy amid the madness of it all. My blog then led me to begin a YouTube channel where I share much of the same in video form. Although I had worked as a model and commercial actress for over 15 years in the 90s through mid 2000s, I was very hesitant to begin creating videos of my own…there’s something odd about filming yourself, but I knew I had to get with the times…so I did! I think what sets me apart from others is that I am very raw and real with what I share. I don’t like to sugarcoat the realities of life, because we have enough curated highlight reels online showing us completely glossed over versions of “life”. I like to show things how they are….and I also like to share that aging gracefully and naturally is a wonderful alternative to fearing aging, especially as a woman. I’m 51 years old and do not have any cosmetic interventions like Botox, fillers, or anything else. I have chosen to age naturally and well by way of a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, and solid skincare. Since I don’t believe in gatekeeping, I love to share all of the tips and tricks I’ve learned to stay radiant at any age!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I want other women to know that life does not end when we hit middle age. We have so much wisdom and life experience to share by the time we hit our 40s that the new chapters we begin to dive into can be some of the most empowering and magical. That’s why I believe so strongly in sharing our stories whether it’s online or just reaching out to chat to someone in our community who may need a little advice or an ear to lend. As we grow into our midlife selves, and learn how to navigate aging, parenting young adults, becoming an empty nester (this one hits me hard in the heart right now!), and even perimenopause/menopause….knowing that we are not alone in these processes and the feelings that come with them is priceless.
