Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Flood.
Hi Meredith, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town in Mason, Michigan. Life was simple; we were surrounded by farms and open land with hardly any neighbors. I always dreamed of having a bigger life in a busy city, so after college, I moved to Denver, Colorado. My time there was amazing, but it was unfortunately cut short due to Covid-19 hitting.
Because there wasn’t much work going on during the pandemic, I moved back to Michigan to live with my parents temporarily. I was looking for something to occupy my time with, so I started studying photography. The more I studied, the more interested I became, and realized this could be a perfect career for me. After months of researching, I invested in my first real camera.
I had no idea what I was doing with it, but slowly learned over time thanks to Youtube. I took a leap of faith, started my photography business, and moved to Arizona. People thought I was crazy for moving to another state again, but I was determined to make it work. I felt a little overwhelmed with how I was going to find clients and make this business happen, but for some reason, I really had a desire to shoot photos in the desert and start a career here.
After I made the move, I joined a bunch of social media groups to spread the word that I was a new photographer in Arizona looking for work. From there, I second shot weddings for several talented photographers and even found my own clients to do shoots for.
I’m so incredibly blessed with an amazing career that I’m so passionate about, and I now know that I can take it with me wherever I go.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like my life has been all over the place the past few years, but I can honestly say that I’m so happy with how much progress I’ve made. Moving to two different states where I knew absolutely no one has been extremely difficult, but I’m just so proud of the fact that I actually did it. I had zero friends, zero families, and had to work random jobs at times just to get by.
There have been many highs followed by many lows. Sometimes, I get so lonely and sad that I can’t even believe I chose this for myself and there have been times when I feel like I made a huge mistake and I just wanted to move back home to Michigan. Throughout all of my struggles, I make sure to remind myself of how much I love it out here and how ‘at home’ I feel.
The love I have for the west is indescribable; if I didn’t love it so much, I wouldn’t have moved here twice! I’m so grateful that I have photography because it allowed me to move somewhere completely random and start fresh. Finding clients was a struggle at times because I didn’t know anyone, but I truly pushed myself like I never have before and I’m so grateful that I did.
Sometimes, I look around at all of the beautiful scenery and can’t even believe this is really my life. It seems so insane that I moved across the country twice, started a photography business, and now I’m getting ready to permanently stay in the west forever. The mountains truly are my home, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer; I specialize in weddings, engagements, and families. I’m known for my warm editing tones and poses that always involve movement.
I’m most proud of my ability to see a shot from many different angles. I try to mix it up and not directly shoot from ‘head on’ all the time. I’m always thinking of unique photo ideas because I want to set myself apart from everyone else.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I listen to Jai Long’s podcast “Make Your Break” and Sadie Robertson’s podcast “Whoa That’s Good.”
These both have helped me in my professional and personal life because they offer good advice in many different situations. Jai’s is more for my photography business, and Sadie’s is more for my personal life.
