Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Watson Erickson, CFRE.

Melissa Watson Erickson, CFRE

Hi Melissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my journey. It all began with a deep-seated passion for storytelling and community impact. Early in my career, I immersed myself in the arts and nonprofit sectors, learning firsthand the transformative power of creativity and philanthropy. These experiences shaped my belief in the ability of art to provoke social change and my commitment to supporting those who create it.

Founding The Funding Studio was a natural progression, driven by a desire to bridge the gap between creative visionaries and the resources needed to bring their projects to life. Alongside my team, I’ve had the privilege of nurturing diverse voices and empowering projects that tackle pressing social issues. From fostering regional storytelling initiatives to supporting independent films that challenge societal norms, every endeavor has reinforced my belief in the healing potential of philanthropy.

Today, as the Executive Director of The Funding Studio and a passionate advocate for the arts, I continue to champion authenticity and connection in fundraising. My journey is defined by collaboration, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to nurturing sustainable partnerships that drive positive change. I am honored to share this journey with you and look forward to continuing to empower communities through the transformative power of philanthropy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

It has certainly not been a smooth road, and I wouldn’t expect it to be. Building a meaningful impact takes time, perseverance, and a lot of learning along the way. One of the biggest struggles early on was the balancing act between vision and execution. While I was driven by the belief that philanthropy and the arts could change the world, it took time to align the right partnerships and secure the necessary funding for these projects.

Another challenge was navigating the complex world of nonprofit management and fundraising. Understanding the nuances of sustaining relationships with donors, balancing the creative and financial needs of projects, and staying true to the mission while adapting to the realities of funding requirements were all growing pains. At times, there were setbacks and moments of doubt—whether we were going to meet our goals or if we were being strategic enough. But those struggles ultimately taught me resilience and the importance of maintaining focus on the long-term vision.

There were also moments of self-doubt—asking myself if I was qualified to take on such big challenges. But I leaned on mentors, and over time, I grew more confident in my ability to navigate these challenges. In the end, every obstacle has been a stepping stone to greater understanding and success. The key is to keep moving forward with passion, authenticity, and a commitment to learning from both successes and failures.

I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come at The Funding Studio, and each struggle has only fueled my belief in the healing power of philanthropy even more.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At The Funding Studio, we specialize in providing strategic fundraising services and fiscal sponsorship to independent filmmakers, artists, and organizations with a social impact mission. Our work revolves around helping visionary projects that align with regional storytelling and community-driven initiatives secure the resources they need to succeed.

What I’m most known for is fostering authentic connections between projects and donors—bringing people together in a way that doesn’t just ask for money but invites them into the mission. I’m deeply passionate about the healing power of philanthropy and how it can be leveraged to not only fund creative projects but also create long-lasting relationships that empower both the donors and the recipients of their support. It’s not just about raising money; it’s about creating an ecosystem of giving that sustains projects and creates positive change.

What sets me apart from others in the fundraising space is my hands-on, personalized approach to every campaign. I believe that every detail counts, from the messaging to how donors are stewarded. I don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach—every client is unique, and I take the time to understand their vision and how to authentically connect them with the right supporters. My background as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and my experience across various sectors—especially in the arts—give me a well-rounded perspective that blends creativity with strategic fundraising expertise.

I’m most proud of the work we’ve done in supporting projects that address social issues, from independent films exploring the complexities of family dynamics to community-based initiatives that amplify marginalized voices. These projects don’t just entertain; they create space for conversations and transformation. Seeing these projects grow and knowing I played a role in making them happen is incredibly fulfilling.

What truly sets The Funding Studio apart is our commitment to being more than just consultants; we’re partners who understand that successful fundraising is about creating trust, building long-term relationships, and empowering those who carry the vision to achieve it.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The nonprofit and philanthropic sector is evolving rapidly, and I believe we’ll see some significant shifts in the next 5-10 years. One of the most prominent trends will be the increasing demand for transparency and accountability. Donors are becoming more discerning and want to see the direct impact of their contributions. This means organizations will need to be not only transparent with their financials but also more focused on showing tangible outcomes and how their work is creating lasting change. The future of philanthropy will be more collaborative, tech-driven, and focused on accountability. Organizations that embrace these changes and prioritize authentic, transparent relationships with their supporters will thrive.
