Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Greene.
Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like anyone else, when I was a kid, I idolized musicians and actors. My friends and I would choreograph dances, sing Sonny and Cher songs, or act out scenes from our favorite movies in the backyard and then use our parents’ giant camcorder from the mid-’90s to film it and watch it on video cassette later that day. I’ve always been drawn to the arts and exploring different avenues to use my talents.
I’ve been working as a public radio host for over ten years in some of the biggest markets in the US and I currently host mornings on Classical KBACH, but most recently I’ve been working freelance as a voice-over artist. As a kid, I used to imitate Jimmy Stewart a lot, I just love strong, memorable voices like his and I still impersonate him from time to time.
I think we all have a fascination with actors and artists that bring something to life that feels like home to us, and as challenging as it is, it’s a craft I enjoy working at in voice-over. I currently study with Marla Finn from the Phoenix Film Institute. She’s been the voice of Velma from Scooby Doo cartoons and has worked for Hanna Barbera, and we have a blast reading scripts together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road. I have to constantly remind myself that it’s peaks and valleys, especially when trying to book gigs as a voice actor.
Sometimes you just have to be patient and wait for the right thing to fall into place. One of the hardest parts of voice acting is having to be your authentic self, it’s so much easier for me to tap into a character’s voice than to sound like I’m having a conversation with friends for a commercial script.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a voice-over artist and I specialize in commercial, industrial, and animations.
I’m known in the valley as the morning show host on 89.5 KBACH in the valley and I get to do a lot of work from my home studio. I just live with my tortoise, Roger who you will see in the picture, and I have a voice for him on my character reel, I like doing kid voices but it’s all great because of the variety I get to do.
