Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Limon.
Hi Jonathan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
To know more about me, I go by the name Limon. I consider myself a creative artist, highly focusing on photography and music. I ended up where I am today for my love of music.
As a musician, I always focused on creating my own material from start to finish. I never had the visuals for it. My on-and-off journey, although, did allow me to explore the artistic side as well as the business side. I received my associate’s degree in business and a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership with honors recognition.
After school, I planned to return to my art, but I wanted more than what I was doing before. Branding became important to finding my identity, as well as having imagery for myself. This would allow people to see what I see through my perspective. Picking up a camera and spending a year learning how to operate it and learn different effects or edits put me in a position with high creative power. I didn’t know I loved photography so much, but my passion for it pushed me to be the very best version of myself. To this day, I still push myself to learn more and work more. My art has to be perfect.
JLimon Visualz was created as an entity to help others find their brand, their look. What I do for myself, I want to do for others. I want to help business owners and artists find their place and express their passion or work to the world. JLimon Visualz is a service that caters to individuals looking to express themselves where they can be their unique self.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been the easiest, but also not the most difficult. When I focused primarily on music in the past, it always involved learning to operate different DAWs and software to create the sound you wanted to perfect. From the lyrical writing to the production of the song, there were so many steps involved. With photography, it’s about the same process of learning.
I hyper-focused on learning the different functions of my camera. That was important, so I knew how to adjust settings and different shooting modes for different occasions. Aside from that, I had to become familiar with Adobe programs (my preferred choice) such as Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Adobe Express, and the list goes on. This itself was a struggle in choosing my work style.
My struggles came from having to learn to work with the limitations I’d be working with. I’m a Canon shooter, but almost anywhere you go, you will be told that Sony is the industry standard. Regardless, I don’t let that get to me because I believe a true artist can make a beautiful portrait regardless of the tools you have. It’s all about using the tools you provided to their best potential.
I know the quality of my work and what I can bring to the table. I’m not scared to face challenges or limitations when it comes to the industry.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Right now, as a photographer, I’m operating under the brand JLimon Visualz.
I work in photography, focusing on portraits and real estate photography, but open to other potential work. I am known for the portrait work I’ve created. Working on my photography for about two years now. I’m a natural light shooter, but flash is still something to bring into my work. I love to bring the natural beauty out of my environment and subject.
I’m proud of the quality of work I’ve brought to the table recently. I feel I’ve reached a milestone in my photos because of the skills I’ve learned by focusing on composition, placement, and even my editing skills. What sets me apart from others is my experience expressing my art.
I care about the work I put out there and always want things to be perfect. I treat my work as the best piece there can be, and I will do the same for my clients.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, the struggles I went through really created the person I am today. Born in a family of six children to immigrant parents in Yuma, AZ, I didn’t have a lot.
I lived my youth years in Yuma and eventually moved to Somerton around the time I was 13, I was always a smart kid and felt this was an opportunity for me to make a new look for myself. I got tired of being picked on and known as the smart kid, so I wanted to be recognized for something else.
I got into a lot of trouble and hung out with the wrong crowd throughout middle school and high school. I gained a lot of street smart and was exposed to a lot of things somebody my age should not be exposed to. Street life, gangs, graffiti, drugs, and breaking the law were the norm to me.
I realized what I was getting myself into when I was around 17; I had a great reputation as an individual because of the work I put in with the crews I would run with. I started exploring my passion for music along with graffiti and tried to turn something positive out of it; I even went with the rap name “Motive” before using the last name I’m well known for, Limon.
Now, I love to work on my art at home, even as a hobby. Photography is one thing I’m working on growing and building my own business out of it. As a self-taught artist, it’s incredible to put yourself in a position where you can express yourself and help others in the process with your work.
