Life & Work with Jill Ryder of Chicago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Ryder.

Jill, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My design career started with a children’s clothing line I created roughly 30 years ago. As my children grew my business pivoted, hence I began designing trendy woman’s tops. If I couldn’t find what I wanted in the stores, I would whip up something unique and always gained many compliments. My latest passion project is taking upcycled blazers and creating one of a kind wearable art. I love music and that is what inspired me for this idea. I utilize upcycled band logos and then design an eclectic collage onto the blazer. I try and keep genres together, however sometimes it’s about the overall look and it’s a mixed bag. With so much nostalgia with the different bands, the blazers become conversation pieces.

My children are a big part of my business. From being my models, social media content creators, or just being my biggest cheerleaders.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Boutiques are the perfect place to showcase and sell the band blazers. Customers have fun looking at the different designs and trying them on for the perfect fit. I’d like to expand my horizons into more boutiques to spread the love.
I do have an Etsy account. Pictures online don’t always do the blazer justice as one can’t try on or feel the product. I’m always happy to walk a customer through the sizing and answer any additional questions. No matter where you live you can have a Standout Upcycled blazer!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Standout Upcycled Fashion is my side hustle. I started this small business not even a year ago and it’s going strong. Watching people’s reactions to the blazers is so exciting for me, and I know I’m onto something good. From sourcing the quality blazer to sewing on the handmade patches, every detail matters. Truly a labor of love!
Rock on!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I went to college at Arizona State University back in the day. I always have had a sweet spot for Arizona. The weather, mountains, shopping, and the people are all amazing. I live in Chicago now, but so many of my friends have relocated to Scottsdale. Who knows, I may be next….
