Life & Work with Jerry Cabezudo of Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Cabezudo.

Hi Jerry, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was little, I’ve loved drawing pictures. Movies and video games were where most of my inspiration came from. Drawing has always been something I’ve done for fun and for myself, but when I was a Junior in high school, I realized that my work had some potential. I also found a love for sharing my work and receiving feedback on it. The more I grew and learned about my particular set of skills, the more I felt confident in my work. Until recently, I haven’t focused hard on making my art business dream a reality. However, today I am an aspiring freelance artist on Ko-Fi.com, and things are getting a little more interesting. I’ve also had a few clients since taking my work more seriously. For example, I designed the logo for Cab Training LLC. That’s my big brother’s business that I’m super proud to be affiliated with.

Going back to inspiration, when it comes to my art, I always hope to tell a good story because good stories are intriguing to me. I can only hope that one day my story will be intriguing enough for someone to stop and listen to. Perhaps then I’ll know I’ve succeeded.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am far from content with where I’m at. Honestly, I’ve barely even started. Like any story worth listening to, mine was one full of pitfalls and tribulations. I’ll spare the details, but understand it has not been a smooth ride. I am willing to move forward and am confident I can overcome whatever obstacle life has in store for me next. I will now appreciate what I have and always strive to improve myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in character design and concept art. I am an artist, and I love drawing characters and creating stories. I’ve written several short stories and have created a solid handful of original characters from multiple genres. As I’ve mentioned before, I love art that tells a good story, so I try to tell stories with what I draw by making environments look “lived-in”, and characters look established in their respective settings. When I say “lived-in,” I mean weathered or aged.

I’m proud I’ve come so far and still have much to learn. Looking back, I can see my mistakes, where I could’ve done better, and looking forward, I can see who I want to become. Both perspectives help me be the best version of myself in the present.

What sets me apart from most is that I never copied anyone else’s art growing up. Even in the more formative stages of my artistic upbringing, I never attempted to emulate another artist’s style. I think this allowed me to develop my unique vision.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory from childhood is when my family and I went to Disneyland and California Adventure. I think the particular ride I’m thinking of was in Calfornia Adventure and was called Grizzly Run. So, on one of the days, that ride had no line because it was late-Fall, and it was freezing in the nighttime. We were cold by the end and chafed our inner thighs, so we had to walk like penguins back to the hotel because it hurt so bad. My brothers and I thought it was a great idea to end the day by riding that ride as many times as we could.
