Today we’d like to introduce you to Jensen Cook.
Hi Jensen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Since my last interview with Voyage Phoenix, a lot has happened. I’ve launched my website and started my freelance makeup business. My website is Makeupbyjensen.com, and I take in all of my clients. Whether you’re looking for a makeup artist for your special wedding day, an important event, photoshoots, Halloween makeup, and so much, you can book with me through there. My makeup journey has been a huge blessing. I’m continuing my love and passion for makeup artistry and trying to learn as much as possible. With each client that I have, I always learn something new. This crazy dream of mine is finally starting to form, and I couldn’t be more excited!
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There will always be struggles, but the rewards will always outweigh them. While working with my clients, their makeup doesn’t always turn out how I anticipated. Or even trying to stay booked during a slow season is a struggle. But in the end, everything always works out the way it’s supposed to.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I’m Jensen Cook, a self-taught freelance makeup artist from Pinetop, Arizona. I specialize in creative, special effects, and full-glam makeup; I own a small freelance makeup business. My website is makeupbyjensen.com, and I mainly freelance in bridal and photoshoot makeup, but my real love lies in creative and special effects makeup. I feel what I’m most proud of is how much I’ve grown as an artist. I started makeup at the young age of 11, and I haven’t stopped since. My looks have become a lot more detailed and creative. Never in a million years did I think I’d be freelancing doing makeup at only 17. I love makeup for different reasons. What sets me apart from other artists is being so young and so diverse in my skill. I haven’t met many people who are not only my age but who can also do different varieties of makeup I can. The creative and crazy side of makeup allows you to create and be whoever you want to be and express yourself however you see fit. While playing with the glamorous side of makeup and working on clients, it’s almost like sculpting and reconstructing the human face. Seeing your clients feel their most beautiful, confident, and free is gratifying.
What quality or characteristic is most important to your success?
There are a lot of things that I take pride in that has made me successful thus far. One of them is being kind. I’ve learned that kindness can take you a long way in life. I feel we treat the clients in our chains with dignity and respect. It’ll never go unnoticed. No matter what, I feel that each of my clients should be treated like gold. To me, that means being on time, having conversations and getting to know them, giving them a makeup look that they want and not what I think would look better, and just making them feel better than when they walked in. However, I think the most important is just being yourself. Nobody in this world will like you; you can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But to those who like you, you’ll never be forgotten.
