Life & Work with Jennifer Kroll of Desert Ridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Kroll.

Hi Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Jennifer, a mom, wife, and abstract/geometric painter. Throughout the year, I split my time living and painting between Birmingham, MI, and Phoenix, Az. Most days, you can find me painting in my studio or planning my next artwork in either location. When I’m not in my studio, I’m either on the tennis court, traveling, or running a household day-to-day! I have a passion for interior design and an excitement for collecting all types of artwork. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Eastern Michigan University and have my nail technician license. I have also worked as a jewelry designer, so I need precision and detail in my artwork. I am fascinated by colors and shapes and love experimenting with different combinations. My paintings are often the result of these explorations. Sometimes new ideas happen accidentally as I mix colors or add and subtract lines and shapes VOILÀ – a unique design emerges.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I graduated college with a Fine Arts degree (focusing on fiber art). Throughout my college years and beyond, I studied many different art mediums. I learned to use almost every medium I could think of except painting. In 2018, while my husband and I were traveling, searching for art for our new home, I felt inspired to return to my art roots and attempt to learn to paint. With knowledge about acrylic paints, painting surfaces, and techniques, I relied on YouTube for painting advice, over time and with quite a few sloppy messes. My painting skills advanced, and my designs began to develop into my very own recognizable style.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I use bright, “happy” colors throughout my work. My “Barcode” paintings quickly became my signature style, and I continue to receive many requests for variations of my “Barcode” paintings. These days, I am consistently working on custom paintings that collectors have commissioned (hired) to paint. When I began painting in 2018, I couldn’t have imagined that my paintings would be on display at George Washington University, on the walls of a Louis Vuitton store, or in the homes and offices of prominent art collectors.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’d love to hear if you are interested in working on a project together or would like to discuss commissioning me to paint a work of art. I love everything related to the creative process, so let’s get started!
