Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Heggie.
Hi Jeff, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from college with an Entrepreneurship Major. While I was going to school, I worked part-time at a bank. After graduation, they offered me a great position as a personal lender. But at the time I was also a professional rodeo cowboy (steer wrestler), and that took priority over a job. So, I actually turned the job down with the bank.
However, a number of months later I reconsidered and the offer with the bank was still there. I started with the bank as a personal lender with a focus on mortgage lending and investing. I was fortunate enough to be able to climb the ladder quickly and soon had my own branch that I was managing.
While at the bank I still had a number of business interests and got into real estate.
One day I was sitting in a client’s office and saw a catalogue on his desk for Cultured Stone. He was a home builder and their company used a lot of artificial stone veneer. Within a short time after that meeting, I left the bank to start my own artificial stone veneer manufacturing company. At the time I lived in Southern Alberta (Canada). I built my first factory there and then soon built a second one in Utah.
Having a business tied to the home building industry means we had all the ups and downs that industry has had as well. Since founding Kodiak Mountain Stone in 2005 there have been many ups and downs and we’ve had to pivot a number of times. Unfortunately, through it all we ended up closing our doors in 2021. It was the ultimate learning experience as an entrepreneur running this company for 16 years.
While running Kodiak Mountain Stone, I had many opportunities to mentor and coach different entrepreneurs in a variety of businesses. As time went on a was coaching more and more entrepreneurs and also going through some business coaching certification processes.
During the last 3-4 years I’ve been able to shift most of my time and focus to my coaching. I have a number of programs ranging from my one-on-one coaching, online training programs, mastermind groups, group coaching, and more
In addition to this, I’ve been a basketball coach for the past 20 years. With all of my clients, I spend a lot of time focused on personal development and creating a powerful mindset. Many of the tools and strategies that I use with my entrepreneur clients I have used with my athletes as well. During the pandemic, one of my clients asked me to work with her son, who was in high school. He was a kid that had spent years working on his skills as a football player because he had hopes and dreams of playing in college. But during the pandemic, with cancelled seasons and so many other challenges they faced, he had lost all of his drive, motivation, and hope. Besides this athlete, I was seeing depression and other mental health issues that my athletes were dealing with. To make a long story short, I created a program called The Confident Athlete Program (www.JeffHeggie.com/ConfidentAthlete). Athletes spend a lot of time and effort working on their physical game, but very few focus on their mental game, which is just as important. In this program, we help the athletes develop their mental strength and build their confidence.
One additional hat that I wear ties back into my banking days. I’m a licensed mortgage lender in the state of Arizona and work with the DeWit Branch of Geneva Financial (https://www.genevafi.com/jeff-heggie/).
I also have three podcast shows www.JeffHeggie.com/podcasts/
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think that there are many entrepreneurial journeys that you could refer to as bing a smooth road.
With my manufacturing company it was a lot steeper learning curve than I had anticipated. There was a lot to learn with everything ranging from the manufacturing to sales.
When I started the company, I was trained in the manufacturing process by a company in Missouri. I remember on the flight home thinking, “this is a lot easier than I thought it would be.” One of my competitors had a nice brown color called “Dakota Brown.” I was confident that the next day I was going to be able to go into my factory create a stone that looked the exact same as their Dakota Brown stone on day one.
In the manufacturing process, we would make the stone and then remove them from their molds the following day. The next day I was excited to get to the factor to take our “Dakota Brown” stone out of their molds. I planned to keep that first stone in my office as a significant milestone for the company. But when I took the first stone out of the mold, expecting to see a beautiful brown color, it was PINK! That first stone is out in the middle of a field somewhere because it got thrown as far as I could throw it.
We did perfect our coloring, but there were a lot more lessons to be learned than just the coloring. It was an amazing entrepreneurial journey. Fortunately, those experiences are great for my coaching different entrepreneurs today.
On the coaching side of things, when I first started on a more full-time basis, I wanted to host and facilitate a mastermind group of entrepreneurs. I was excited and well prepared. I booked a facility in Queen Creek and was ready to offer so much value to some eager entrepreneurs. My hope was to have 25+ people in attendance. It ended up being a great event, but unfortunately, there were a lot more empty seats than filled seats. I had 5 people in attendance.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Mortgage Business: After leaving the banking industry, I always spoke highly of it. For me, it was a great business to be involved in.
I love that you can play such a significant role in an individual or a family’s life when it comes to them buying a home, refinancing a home, renovating, etc.
When the opportunity came to get back into the mortgage industry and have it work around my coaching, I didn’t hesitate. The people and company I work with (Geneva Financial) have been incredible.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have so many… One that always stands out was a trip to Disneyland in 1984.
We had so many experiences on this trip that have impacted my life since then.
Because of this trip, one of my main goals in life has always been to create experiences like this for my own family. I want to be able to create the experiences that they will remember and reflect on for the rest of their lives.
