Today we’d like to introduce you to Farrah Gamechuk
Hi Farrah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My Story
By: Farrah Gamechuk
Both of my parents played basketball when I was growing up. This definitely sparked my love for the game. Here’s my journey. As a very active child growing up I always needed something to do. So my parents resorted to putting me in gymnastics when I was four. We went to a local gym twice a week for two years. My mother decided that it wasn’t for me anymore and put me into basketball. The first year I was uninterested and uninvolved in basketball and begged my mom to let me quit to go back to gymnastics, but my mom persevered. Within a few months I was addicted and dedicated to the game and have been ever since. Everyday I am grateful for my mom for what she did and continues to do for me, and this is my story.
Rewind back to the second grade, I had joined the YMCA Youth Basketball League. This is where I learned the fundamentals of basketball. Later I got recruited to a competition basketball team where I continued to elevate my game. Within a year we traveled to Phoenix, Arizona for a basketball tournament. We were playing up 3 divisions, although we didn’t do well in the tournament. This experience taught me a great deal about both myself and the game of basketball. Over the next few years, I dedicated myself to training and improving.
As I entered the 6th grade, I began to notice a significant improvement in my game. I was training twice daily, six days a week, with games on Sundays. It was through consistent effort that I saw my skills advance. That same year, I made the move from Junior Varsity to Varsity Basketball. The transition was challenging, but I persevered, determined to secure my spot on the team. I started traveling more often for basketball and shared my progress on Instagram, where I connected with many of my supporters to this day.
Now we are all caught up. Lately, I’ve visited Charlotte, North Carolina, Fairbanks, Alaska, Phoenix, Arizona, Roseville, California, and Chicago, Illinois this year! I am grateful I have been fortunate enough to go on many basketball trips this year and wish to continue on. I am now preparing myself for my last middle school season. My parents and I have been active on Instagram, gaining many wonderful fans and supporters whom I deeply value!
I have grown literally and figuratively in my basketball journey and wish to continue! I am thankful for all of the people who have supported me and all of the connections I have had. This journey has let me meet wonderful people and opportunities I would not have gotten without the game of basketball. Basketball is what makes me happy, what keeps me up at night, what motivates me the next morning. Basketball is my life, and this is my story.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been ups and downs all through my basketball journey, but I’ve matured enough to understand that’s part of the game.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a basketball player and I’m known for my shooting and lock down defense. What I’m most proud of is when I had an 18 point game against a tough team, I had two threes, three steals, and an AND 1. The AND 1 was a three that knocked me off of my feet. This is my favorite basketball memory because that team tested my abilities and made me better.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Perseverance.
