Life & Work with Em Denney of Central Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Em Denney.

Hi Em, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was raised with a love of photography from my dad. He was always running around with a camera. When he was in the military, he would take photos everywhere he was stationed or visited in Europe and other places. Recently, I’ve picked up a camera again and ventured out into the world of concert photography. I just have a soft spot for local music and supporting as many local businesses as possible. I’d do it all for free if I could. I reach out to local bands and artists and try to bring their stage presence and art to the forefront of each photo I take. One good photo or video clip could change someone’s life, and I want every single person to have an opportunity to follow their dreams.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a bumpy road transitioning from a hobby photographer to a professional, and it’s not the easiest job to just start making money from right off the bat, but I just want to support the subjects of my photos. That’s all that really matters to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer, but I specialize in concert photography. Low light can be hard to tackle, but it’s my favorite setting. I have shot larger bands such as Hinder, The Ataris, and Bridge City Sinners, but local acts will always be my bread and butter. I try my hardest to observe the artists and make sure that their style and vibes come through in the photos. I think it’s very important to find your niche style, so that every single shoot doesn’t look the same. Not every band plays the same kind of music – so your photos shouldn’t look the same every single time. It gets boring for you, and underwhelming to the clients.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a quiet, independent person. I’m an observer, and always have been. I grew up in Florida, so Arizona has been a big change for me, and I feel like my inner child has had a much happier time lately here. In middle school I discovered pop punk music, and have graduated to Metal and Alternative, which is the main genre I shoot.
