Life & Work with Derrick Hicks of Arizona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Hicks

Hi Derrick, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

My journey in the beauty industry began in North Carolina, where I worked with Tommy Hilfiger Makeup before joining MAC in the early 2000s. This pivotal step led me westward, where I collaborated with numerous production companies on both indie and major film productions. One of my career highlights was serving as an assistant artist on The Walking Dead, which opened the door to working with celebrities and eventually becoming the lead assistant artist for Seasons 5 and 6 of The Voice.

After meeting my husband, we relocated to Phoenix for his residency, and I now commute for select projects as needed. Recently, I’ve been enjoying a more local focus, working with brides, quinceañeras, parties, and Scottsdale’s vibrant high-society community. When I’m not busy with these projects or traveling, I dedicate my time to growing my business and connecting with my audience through content creation on various social platforms.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been numerous challenges. First off in the early 2000’s it wasn’t common for men in my small town to be in the makeup industry. It was looked down on. Being a gay man also wasn’t very popular. Which is one reason why when the opportunity presented itself to move west and get out of the Bible Belt and be embraced by people who accept me and my talents without the small town attitude and mindset
