Life and Work with Chrome Rhino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrome Rhino. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Chrome Rhino formed in late 2019. James (guitar/vocals) and Travis (bass/vocals) had written a ton of songs together with a band called “The Post-Apocalyptic Blues Band” and wanted to try and play some of them here in Arizona (James is originally from England and moved to Virginia where Travis is from when he was 14). We met Jared (keys/vocals) at an open mic at The Rogue Bar (RIP) while we were playing with Ali A. and the Agency, started working on some of the songs we had written, then eventually we all started writing together. We played a handful of shows in late 2019-early 2020, tracked an album w/ the amazing Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket Studios in Mesa and then… (you probably know where this is going)… Covid happened. We luckily had tracked everything a couple of weeks before Covid and ended up in lockdown listening to Bob’s mind-blowing mixes of the tracks he would email us. When things had settled down somewhat in later 2020, we enlisted the great Jay (drums) for a couple of livestreams and now we are complete.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Covid truly changed everything we had been planning. Our album release, planned videos, and every show we had prepared for had to be scrapped and re-thought out. We’ve always played live music in bands since we were 16 so not playing regularly was a difficult adjustment. In hindsight, it pushed us into creative new avenues. We found social media to be a great way to reach all the bored people looking for fun escapism. We reached out to our video wizard friends Garret and Ben and actress Amy and with their help, we were able to film a music video for our first single “Zombie Vision”. They found such creative ways to accomplish the paranoid horror in the video and Amy’s performance took it to the next level. There were lots of clever workarounds used to film it safely during lockdowns – and using green screens we were able to film the band parts remotely. Like most musicians, we really had to adapt and change which was difficult but ultimately, we learned a lot.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We love to play live and try to make every show different- we play at least one different cover every show and are trying never to repeat the same cover twice… we’ll see how long we can stick to that. We’re very influenced by horror movies and sci-fi (you can hear all that horror movie geekdom in our debut album, I Think They’re After Me).

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We released our debut album, I Think They’re After Me in March 2021 so if you listened to that, we will love you always. You can find us on Spotify, Bandcamp – pretty much all the streaming places! We post regular weirdness on our IG/FB account. Come see one of our shows as well!
