Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Massey
Hi Brooke, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with photography began in high school, where I first picked up a camera and realized how powerful capturing a moment could be. Growing up in South Carolina, I was always surrounded by beautiful landscapes and moments that told a story, and that sparked my passion for photography. When I moved to Arizona, I was inspired by the desert’s raw beauty, and it gave me a fresh perspective on capturing nature, wildlife, and real, candid moments in people’s lives.
Starting DarkenedLover Photography came naturally after a few years of honing my skills. I’ve always had a deep connection to authenticity—whether that’s in the candid emotions of a portrait, the energy of a sports game, or the subtle magic of nature. I wanted my work to reflect real-life stories, not just posed moments. It wasn’t easy at first, especially since I’m introverted, and learning to market my business and communicate with clients was a big challenge. But I pushed through, adapting as I went along, learning not just the art of photography but the business side of it as well.
Over the years, I’ve worked on building my portfolio, and now I specialize in a range of photography niches, from pets and nature to sports and events. I love the variety and the opportunity to connect with so many different people and places. It’s been a journey full of growth and lessons, but I’m proud of where I am today and excited for what’s next!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has helped shape me into the photographer and person I am today. One of the biggest hurdles I faced was learning to adapt to health changes after a car accident. It was tough at first, but it also gave me a new perspective on life and my work. Instead of seeing it as a limitation, I’ve learned to work with it, adjusting my pace and finding creative ways to still pursue my passion. It’s made me more patient and resilient, and I appreciate each step of the process even more.
Being introverted also had its challenges, especially in the business world where marketing and networking are key. But instead of viewing it as a weakness, I’ve embraced it as part of who I am. I’ve found ways to connect with people on a deeper level and show my true self through my work.
Looking back, every struggle has been a lesson that’s made me stronger. I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s all part of my growth and journey. I’m excited to see where it takes me next!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer, and my work focuses on capturing real, candid moments that tell authentic stories. At DarkenedLover Photography, I specialize in a variety of niches, including lifestyle, pets, events, nature, sports, and automotive photography. What I’m known for is my ability to capture the raw emotions and natural beauty in every setting, whether it’s the love between a couple at a wedding or the stillness of nature in the desert.
What sets me apart from others is my emphasis on authenticity. I don’t just aim for perfectly posed shots; instead, I look for those fleeting moments that people might overlook—like a subtle glance, a shared laugh, or the beauty in everyday scenes. My darker, moodier aesthetic also adds a unique touch to my work, helping to create depth and emotion in each photograph.
I’m most proud of the connection I build with my clients and subjects. I’ve had the chance to work with all kinds of people and animals, and I love being able to create an environment where they feel comfortable enough to be themselves. It allows me to capture something real and meaningful for them to look back on.
Beyond that, I’m proud of the growth I’ve experienced, from developing my skills to building a brand that truly represents who I am as an artist. It’s been a journey of self-discovery, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice for those just starting out is to stay true to your passion and vision. When you’re starting, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to follow trends or compare yourself to others. But your unique perspective is what will set you apart, so embrace that. Photography is a personal journey, and your growth will come from experimenting and constantly learning.
Something I wish I knew when I was starting out is that it’s okay to make mistakes and take your time. You don’t have to have everything figured out right away. Be patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid to try new things, even if they don’t work out as planned. Every experience is a lesson that will help you grow as an artist and a professional.
Also, don’t underestimate the importance of the business side of photography—marketing, networking, and learning how to communicate with clients are just as crucial as honing your craft. If you’re introverted like I am, take things one step at a time, and focus on building genuine connections. It will pay off in the long run.
Most importantly, enjoy the journey. Every moment behind the camera is an opportunity to learn and improve, and that’s what makes it all so rewarding.
