Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Akers.
Hi Benjamin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I found my passion for photography during my freshman year of high school. I took an introductory photography course and fell in love with capturing images. I soon got my own camera and took more photo classes throughout high school. When it came time to go to college I was unsure of what to do. I knew that photography was my passion but I also knew that I could have a more stable job in Information Technology.
I enrolled in IT courses for my first year of college and soon realized the program wasn’t right for me. I am now a year away from getting my Bachelor’s in Photography at Northern Arizona University. The program has helped me develop my skills, work with fellow photographers and make connections that will be helpful when I start my photography career full time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started off not feeling comfortable shooting anything that wasn’t nature photography. Over time I became more confident in my photography skills and branched out into other areas such as landscape, portrait, sports, and event photography. I primarily focus on landscape and portrait photography now.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I believe that photographers must stay up to date in their knowledge of their gear and software. I don’t always have the newest gear but staying up to date on new photo editing software has improved my workflow.
What do you think about happiness?
Capturing a meaningful portrait image. There are some people that I photograph that don’t have their picture taken often and those images I capture are important to them.
