Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Moore.
Hi Amanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2019, I had left a corporate job with no real plan of what I was going to do or where I wanted to work next. I had worked extremely hard at my previous job, so I told myself I could take a year off to focus on planning my wedding, renovating my house and figuring out what my next career step was. I had no idea at the time that the end result would be owning my own sugar cookie company! A few months into my “funemployment” I took a cookie decorating class for Mother’s Day with my mom and realized I love decorating cookies! After the class, I went home and made cookies for my nephews and posted them on Instagram. From there, people saw them and asked if they could order and it began to snowball into the thriving business I have today!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t say it has been completely smooth sailing the entire time, but overall I feel extremely thankful to have overcome any challenges I have faced rather quickly and easily. The main challenge, of course, was dealing with the pandemic and having to adjust business to fit the needs of the community at that time. I officially started my business the beginning of 2020 (great timing, right?!) and I had a few orders cancel because their events had been canceled. It took about a month for people to start doing drive-by events and once those became popular, the cookie business took off! It was a lot easier for people to have individually packaged cookies to pass out at their baby shower, birthday party, etc. than to cut up slices of cake and serve them to people in their cars.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
If my name hasn’t already given it away, I make cookies! I actually make all kinds of cookies, from chocolate chip cookies and custom cookie cakes to personalized sugar cookies. I would say 95% of my business is decorated sugar cookies, with the occasional order for drop cookies. I am known for coming up with unique, custom sets of cookies that add the final touch to your event or special occasion! I have been very lucky to have customers that trust my vision 100% and let me create an amazing set of cookies based on the information they provide me with. I might be biased but the cookies are also extremely delicious and I am often told by people they will find any reason to order cookies, just so they can eat them again! As a business owner, I am most proud of my ability to grow the business into a full-time and lucrative “job”. Although I previously had a lot of work experience, I didn’t have any direct experience in business or baking. It is still so crazy to me to see that month after month, I have a fully booked calendar and tons of happy customers!
What’s next?
Are you sure we have time for all that?! Just kidding! I really do have so many plans though! In the near future, I hope to hire an employee to help with my administrative work, so I can focus more on cookies and less on emails and paperwork. I also would love to teach cookie classes! I get a lot of requests from people wanting to learn how to decorate and I think it would be awesome to help others learn the art!
