Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Drogosz.
Hi Alec, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Alec Drogosz and I was born in Seattle, Washington but moved to the Phoenix area when I was six years old. Growing up in Seattle, my mother would take me to the aquarium on a weekly basis and to the shores of Puget Sound to explore the coastal waters. When I moved to Arizona and grew up I attended high school and fell into photography and film classes. I realized I could do something special with this talent I discovered I had. After high school, I attended Scottsdale Community College because of its highly sought-after film program. I was a student for two and a half years and after I finished my program I moved to Tenerife, Spain and I finished up my scuba certifications and became an instructor.
After finishing my instructor in scuba and really focusing on my career I moved back to Arizona as my home base so I could continue to travel and work. I now work closely with the award-winning photographer Jim Abernethy, who is a leader in shark conservation and underwater photography. I also have been traveling around to many biodiverse hotspots. Over the last year, I traveled to the southern tip of England and Dartmoor National Park, to the black sand beaches of Iceland, to explore the biodiversity of large sharks in the Bahamas, to the cloud forest of Costa Rica and diving alongside reef manta rays in the Philippines. I am currently exploring new locations to visit in the upcoming year and can’t wait to see what the future brings.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has defiantly not been a smooth road. The pandemic pushed back a good amount of my plans but I’m happy with how it has turned out now instead. Some of the biggest struggles as a conservation photographer are what you see.
Working to stop poachers, or pulling plastic bands that were stuck around sharks. You are really on the front and see how polluted the world is but you have to keep pushing to help conserve the wild on the planet.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in underwater and terrestrial nature photography and film. What sets me apart from the others is that I am known for diving with some of the largest predatory sharks in the world. I also will not stop at anything to get the shot I need.
Even if that means hiking through the rainforest for hours with the mud past our ankles and the non-stop rain with what feels like millions of mosquitos trying to eat you alive. To me, these moments are the best adventures. I am proud of these moments and what I am able to capture from them. Some of these animals are rarely seen or near extinction.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can collaborate or support me by reaching out to me on my social media, and on Instagram my handle is @Alec_Drogosz. I am always looking for collaboration or others who want to learn more about nature photography I am here to help.
