Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki Pollock.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am 32 years old and have been a stay at home Mom since my twins were born in 2013. Like many Moms, I would scroll through Pinterest to find new recipes or fun crafts to do with my kiddos; but, in 2015, I came across a DIY page for a simple wooden tray and thought, “Well, that looks easy! I can do that!” I had never worked with wood or even used power tools before but I was going to make that tray. I headed to Home Depot for my supplies and since I didn’t have a saw at home, I asked them to cut the wood there for me and they did! I got home and made my tray and that was it for me, I was hooked! For my birthday, I asked my husband for a miter saw and made my first bench. This business really started as DIY projects around my house, but I kept getting asked to make things for people and I decided to make a go of it and start Main Street Woodworks.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey has been pretty smooth but I’ve had my struggles too. Starting a business can be tricky and it is a learning process. I have had to learn when my busy season is, when the right times to advertise are, what the right kind of parties or events to do; there are lots of variables. Every business has a market and if you are just starting out, my advice would be to keep learning, don’t give up and don’t get discouraged.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Main Street Woodworks – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Main Street Woodworks is a small woodworking business that I created in Southern Arizona. I make custom furniture and home decor, specializing in the farmhouse style. I hand-paint all of my signs and decor items; so no two pieces are exactly the same. I love being able to make custom pieces that people give as gifts or use to decorate their homes. I also make all the furniture ordered; but, I look forward to when my kiddos are old enough to help out… especially with the sanding!! The woodworking community is a great one to be a part of because there is always something new to learn and fellow woodworkers are always eager to give advice or encouragement when needed. It’s really great!
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
I would advise a young woman starting a career, to always keep your head high and ask for help if you need it. Even the most powerful people in the world had to start somewhere!
