Today we’d like to introduce you to Umberto Lukama.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was first introduced to photography in high school. I took a film photography class and fell in love with the film development process. Ever since – I have been compelled to storytelling. I love being able to tell authentic stories through visuals that are able to captivate and inspire others. I ended up purchasing a camera from a second-hand store while in college and began doing landscape photography. I then moved on to portraits of family and friends and then started doing church photography.
Although, all very different styles of photography, each taught me a new skill set that I was able to develop. The style that I now gravitate towards most is editorial. It allows me to let my creativity function at its fullest capacity. Today, I can see that because I allow space for my creativity to function – I am able to constantly create new and exciting work. I am constantly challenging myself to put out work that is better than my last project and more than anything – I am able to create work that I want to see. Work that inspires me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I think that for a lot of artists – it is easy to get caught up in what other artists are doing and a lot of times this is only deterring you from creating authentic work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Aside from photography – I do social work. It is something that has always been near and dear to my heart.
How do you think about happiness?
My wife. My family. Seeing others succeed by being their true authentic selves. I find that the simplest things bring me the most joy.
