Life and Work with Tiffany cage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany cage.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started practicing yoga occasionally when I was about 18 and looking for a workout that differed from the gym. I come from a gymnastics and cheerleading background so I was looking for group fitness, something that made me feel like I was part of a community. I studio hopped but didn’t really find something I connected with until a couple of years later when my grandma gave me a coupon for a hot yoga studio near her house. I went in with zero expectations for the class and instantly became addicted to how amazing it made me feel. I purchased a membership and became a consistent practitioner. Fast forward five months the studio was running a teacher training program, my friend had enrolled, and I thought why not? I completed my 200-hour yoga alliance certification in May 2011 and started teaching immediately. Since then, I have taught in studios all over the valley, California, Texas, and even had the opportunity to travel to Western Australia to teach in 2015. I have led classes for some of my favorite companies, Spiritual Gangster and Lululemon. I currently teach all my classes at Radi8 Hot Yoga in Arcadia and could not think of a better community to be a part of. We just ran our first Radi8 retreat in Puerto Vallarta that I was lucky enough to be chosen to co-lead with my friend and fellow instructor Angella Tortorici. Life is good in the yoga world and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My biggest piece of advice would be to have confidence and believe in yourself and what you’re doing. Yoga in Phoenix is very saturated and we are blessed to have so many amazing studios and instructors to choose from that you have to bring something unique to the table if you want to connect with people. Be willing to get out of your comfort zone and say yes to any opportunity you are given to get your feet wet and grow as a teacher. Get out in your community and teach for free! Be hungry to learn and don’t be afraid! We all start somewhere.

We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc.
My specialty is hot yoga. There’s something to be said for pushing the boundaries of the environment around you to strengthen your physical endurance and mental focus. I would say that I’m known for my outspoken, no filter personality. I want people to be able to connect with the real me on a personal level not just as their instructor so it’s important to me that I let my true personality come through when I teach. I like to get people out of their comfort zone whether it be my playlist choice, class sequencing, or witty commentary. Speaking of no filter, I’ve been known to blast the gangster rap in my vinyasa flow classes and I’m not sorry about it.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I think the biggest barrier is looking at the industry as a competition over looking at it as a community. I don’t see this issue often, but it’s the one barrier that came to mind because I have experienced it first hand. There’s more than enough yoga to go around if we work together!
