Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Rouse.
Teresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was an eight-year Medical Assistant/Office Manager for a cardiovascular doctor in which I wore many hats, I was burnt out needed a change in my life. I enrolled in Penrose Academy in Scottsdale where we briefly touched on lash extensions at the time I wanted nothing to do with it (looking back now, I know it’s because I couldn’t see what I was doing.) Needing a job after graduation, I applied at Amazing Lash and was hired and bought magnifiers so that I could see. I quickly learned that it came easily for me. It was like second nature. I opened my business in August of 2017 with one client. I made 120 the first month. It was scary, but I knew it was what I wanted to do, so I figured out marketing and kept pushing forward and today, I am doing really well. I am definitely blessed with a gift and love that I am able to use my gift as “work.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was difficult figuring out how to bring in a client, how to advertise effectively specials to run to get clients in the door to get my name out. Knowing I had to cover rent. When you start with one client and struggling to bring in more, it pushes you even more. It is possible to succeed with one client. If you want it, you will find a way. Faith in yourself and your work. It is possible.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a lash artist, I offer classic hybrid and volume. I am most proud of how every client that leaves my studio loves their lashes. I am told by many that my work is different than others. I know my work is good. I’m quick and not many are able to do the sets I do in the amount of time I do. I like to think I am affordable at any pay scale. I offer monthly specials that usually drop my prices even more but I wanted my business to be affordable for every girl on every budget, while still taking in account my worth.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Networking with surrounding beauty professional. I work inside a studio and we all refer clients to each other we also trade hair for lashes nails for lashes they are walking advertisements for me as I am for them.
