Life and Work with Syrin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Syrin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Syrin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hmmm, walk you through my story. Well, it’s kind of a long one, but I’ll keep it as brief as possible! I’ve pretty much been singing my entire life. I grew up around a very musically inclined family, so music was always there and always around. Growing up, my mom put my siblings and I in piano lessons, and I also played the flute for a while too! Instruments played a big part in me being able to hear and find, pitch, tones, melodies, and my rage. I’m definitely still growing and learning what my sound is and what my voice is capable of. But, it wasn’t until the fall of 2015 that I started taking singing seriously. I was 18 years old when I recorded my first song and something just clicked. I made the decision to drop everything and really dive into my gift that year. Since then, it’s been a long, hard journey that I wouldn’t trade for the world. In fall of 2017, I then dropped my first 5 track EP, ‘5706’ and now I’m in the process of working on my second project!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been the smoothest road throughout my musical/artistic journey. As a young 21-year old aspiring singer/songwriter, I have faced a lot of the struggles and am still facing struggles! The main one is finding the means to constantly provide for my craft! Music is not a cheap dream to chase! I dropped out of college a couple years ago in order to pursue my music full time. So, this is pretty much it for me, in terms of not having school or a degree to fall back on. It’s hard when I still have to focus on real-life priorities like working a full-time job, paying bills, saving towards goals, etc. while at the same time chasing this dream of mine. My life has become a constant hustle towards getting to that next level regarding my music. I have the support from family which is such a blessing, but they struggle themselves, so really I’m doing this on my own, not a lot of help and it gets really exhausting at times. I have to remind myself to rest and take care of my health (mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually) in the process. I would tell all these young women, to remain resilient, to remain encouraged. and to believe in themselves even when faced with doubt and people putting them down. Also, ALWAYS put your sanity above overwhelming yourselves to get to the top. You ladies will get there, just be patient. And stand your ground because the music industry is male-dominated, so hold fast to your truths, do everything in love, with intention and don’t give up!

Please tell us about Singer/Songwriter.
I would say, that I’m known mostly for my music. My specialty, you would think is my voice, since I sing but for me, it’s my writing capability. Writing is where I feel most free, most safe, most clear-headed. Poetry is everything to me, so I would definitely want people to acknowledge me as a songwriter first. Because so many female singers within the industry don’t write their own music, that would have to be one of the main things that set me apart. I also, rhyme/flow/rap in some of my music. I blend singing with rhyming and that is for sure a very distinctive sound to my listeners. That sets me apart I think. All of these things, make me very proud. I’m just proud that I’m still here creating and spreading the message of love through my art.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The most important piece of advice I would give to a young woman just starting her career, I mean there’s SO much! Um, it’s hard to answer this question because I’m still young myself and I’m still on my musical journey. There’s A LOT that I still need to accomplish. But, from what I have experienced I would say DO NOT compromise your self-worth on this journey for anybody. Not your family, not your friends, not boys or girls, not relationships, not people within the industry, NO ONE. I know it sounds selfish, but it’s actually going to be the most selfless thing you can do for yourself. It will plummet you to higher realms within your career, Once you compromise your self-worth, your truths and your story for the benefit of others, it robs you of who are you and why you’re starting your walk within your career in the first place. Stand firm on your foundation of who are, Stay true to yourself. And don’t be afraid or embarrassed to tell people what you need and deserve.
