Life and Work with Shauna Fogg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauna Fogg.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shauna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I entered the health and fitness industry about six years ago when I started to work at a combined Golds Gym and CrossFit box. From there, I moved into Orangetheory Fitness for a couple of years and then to where I am now, F45 Training. When I started at F45 in Orange County almost two years ago, I knew immediately that I found my true passion.

This always sounds so cliché when you hear coaches or trainers say this, but I honestly LOVE helping people through their journey to becoming more fit and healthy. No one is made the same and everyone’s journey is different from the next person except for one thing, it’s challenging! I get it. Most people are not like me in the sense that I LOVE to workout. For the majority, it is their least favorite thing to do!

I acknowledge that and let my members know that I am there for THEM and will help them the entire way so they can get to where they want to be.

At F45 Training Biltmore, my biggest goal I set for our studio, as the studio manager, before we opened was to build the BEST community possible to make our members feel safe and cared for. It has now been four months since we’ve opened and I am blown away by how amazing and strong our community is in the studio. They recognize that we provide something that no other studio does! I truly love the fact that I get to build relationships with genuinely amazing people every day and guide them on their new fitness journey.
My studio is known for the passion and energy my staff displays day in and day out. Our members count on us to get them through the workouts and we will never disappoint! I’m beyond proud of the team we have and the community we have built.

April 2017, I had my sweet baby boy, William Wolf. My world was forever changed in the best way possible. I had gained 60 lbs during my pregnancy and for some reason expected the weight to all come off as soon as I gave birth… but that was not quite how it happened.

I ended up needing to get surgery four months after I had my son and officially started operation “journey to pre-baby bod” in September of 2016. Just to make things a little extra challenging for me, this was also around the same time I found out that I had Diastasis Recti (separated abs). My first workout back was my first day working at F45 Training Newport Beach, and I felt embarrassed and unmotivated. I was heavier than I had ever been and did not like the idea of being uncomfortable as I went through the workouts. Burpees, pushups, anything that included jumping… made me FEEL all the extra weight I was carrying and I didn’t enjoy it.

I didn’t want to be the unhealthy mom that couldn’t keep up with her baby though, so my son was all the reason I needed to stay motivated.

It was a long journey, but instead of getting my pre-baby body back, I got a new one. A better one. My mommy bod!

I have stretchy belly skin, stretch marks, separated abs, and a funny looking belly button, but it is my trophy. I’m proud of my new body and I am proud to be a momma.

My husband, son, and I moved here to Arizona from Southern California last July and we absolutely love it. I have been blessed with the opportunity to run, coach, and manage a new F45 Training studio in Biltmore. As well as decided to pursue another passion I have by providing body composition scans to the community and started my business, One Life Body Composition.

My goal since I started back into my fitness journey in Sept. 2016 was to help inspire and motivate anyone I could along the way. I couldn’t have done it without the community I had around me, and I will always be available to anyone looking for support in their own journey.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I have had to/currently deal with is my separated abs.
I used to love lifting heavy and pushing myself to new limits, but with no core stability, I am extremely limited.
Usually, ab separations can be fixed with physical therapy, but my separation is beyond that point. The only fix for me is surgery.

Sweet Sweat waist trimmers became a huge help for me to get through my workouts and actually feel some sense of stabilization through my core as I got back into shape.

Giving up wasn’t an option for me no matter how hard it was in the beginning.
There is no excuse in the world to keep anyone from bettering their health or improving their fitness level.
I modify when I need to, I slow down when I need to, I rest when I need to. Simple as that.

Everyone has to start somewhere.
So, wherever you are at in your fitness journey, just take it one step at a time. No need to try to do more, go faster, or lift heavier than you are capable of!

Please tell us about One Life Body Composition.
I am the owner of One Life Body Composition and I provide body composition scans to local gyms, fitness studios, businesses, etc.

One thing I’ve noticed in the fitness industry is that the majority relies on their scale to track their “progress”. But it’s all a mind game. I have seen a lot of people punish themselves by not eating or doing 2-3 workouts a day if they didn’t like the number they saw on the scale, but what they didn’t realize is that a scale doesn’t show you the “whole picture.” It doesn’t tell you that your weight increased because you increased your muscle mass or that your weight stayed the same because you lost body fat and replaced it with muscle.
My business is mobile, so I travel to local gyms and businesses and provide body composition scans to encourage and provide insight to what body composition is and why it is a better way to track progress AND overall health.

I really take pride in the service I provide to people since I am usually the first step these individuals are taking to improve their overall health.

Once I scan someone, I give an in-depth overview of what their result sheet says and what areas might need improvement.

Of course, these conversations can be tough depending on the current health/fitness level of an individual so I will always courteous and sensitive as I encourage them.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Just since I have been in Arizona, I have already met and networked with so many amazing individuals in the area. Networking allows you to open your mind to new ideas and ventures that can open up so many more doors and opportunities.

Not only that but you are also able to create friendships with like-minded individuals that encourage you to stay motivated!

Instead of getting together with friends and gossiping, we have conversations about how we can be better, how we can grow, and what else we can do to succeed. There’s nothing better than a strong, powerful, and driven Girl Gang!
