Life & Work with Shauna Epperson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauna Epperson.

Hi Shauna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in the healthcare field ten years ago when I was a technician in a physical therapy clinic. From that point forward, I have held every position in the clinic up to where I am today. After I graduated from Regis University, with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy, I began working at a larger company. I found myself wanting a different environment for my patients so that I could spend more one-on-one time with them. With the support and help of my husband, I started Epperson Physical Therapy. Our mission is to improve the quality of life and patient outcomes by providing the highest level of specialized, one-on-one, physical therapy care to each patient. An added benefit is that this business allows me to have more flexibility in my schedule so that I can spend more time with my family.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that the road has been a bit rocky since the beginning. I always knew the kind of practitioner that I wanted to be; however, after being in the field, I found it was tough to achieve that status due to insurance limitations. The model that we chose for our business is cash based – we do not accept insurance. We did that so that we are able to spend more time with each patient. This alone makes it difficult to market our services. Our biggest challenge has been trying to figure out how to best educate our patient population on the benefits of one-one-one care that can’t always be achieved in traditional outpatient clinics. If patients have a high deductible plan they are typically quoted around $100+/- per visit out of pocket and then receive limited time with their therapist. We believe that spending more time with the therapist is going to decrease the number of visits needed and therefore be more cost efficient.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a physical therapist, I treat all types of pain and injuries as well as educate patients on injury prevention. I am certified in dry needling, received my Board Certification in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2019 and am currently working on a certification for pregnancy and postpartum corrective exercise. I believe that continuing education is very important in my field as research is always evolving. I think that my thirst for knowledge sets me apart from others because I am always looking to find the best solution for each patient. My style of care and desire to spend individual time with each patient sets me apart from other clinicians. I am not only treating a patient for their injuries; I am building a relationship with each person.

What does success mean to you?
Professionally, success is being able to “graduate” a patient. I want to be able to give patients the tools to be pain free, not to rely on my services. Personally, success is having a healthy work/life balance. I want my children to see that you can be successful if you follow your passion and put your best foot forward.
