Life and Work with Sharon Morgan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Morgan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey as a Licensed Massage Therapist started back in 2013 when I attended Arizona School of Massage Therapy, now known as The Cortiva Institute. When I graduated their Master Bodyworker Program, I immediately went thru a few different jobs as an LMT, working corporate chair massage to spa work to medical massage in a Chiropractors office. Two years ago, I decided I wanted to run my own private practice with my main focus on Deep Tissue, Sports Therapy. My office is inside a private fitness training studio where the owner works one on one with clients ranging from youth athletes to adults with more life experience than either of us trying to keep their lives active. Concurrently, I too work on all age ranges – anyone who loves an active lifestyle and need more than just relaxation. These puzzles of how to help someone maintain, and achieve a painless to pain-free fitness lifestyle create the most joy in my private practice.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s only been two years on my own and hasn’t been the easiest. Most of my marketing is a word of mouth because my worth only shows when I am able to get my hands on people. It worries me that advertising may bring in some creepy clientele that in this industry we as a whole are trying to avoid. Massage is medicine, not everyone views it that way. So, it’s been slowly building, but I’m starting to see an increase as positive word of mouth gets around and people are looking for more than relaxation, which has its benefits, but not always what people need. I have to say I was nervous to go out on my own considering the financial instability of first going out on your own, but if it is what you want to do – owning your own business – DO IT! Success or failure – it all depends on you and that is actually very exhilarating. You are your own boss, and I am quite proud of what I have accomplished. I still have more work to do, but that’s what makes this so much fun.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with 4R Massage – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My specialties are in deep tissue and sports massage therapy. This includes many different modalities. I have learned, and keep on learning many various forms to incorporate into my work. I put a label “deep tissue, sports therapy” on my work, but it is actually a mixture of everything I have learned. For instance, there are times I use only my God-given tools, and there are other times where I may use cupping techniques, hot stones, scraping, or hot towels into my treatment sessions. What sets me apart from others? Honestly, I can’t really tell you because each LMT has their own style, and since I’ve been working on my own, I only pay attention to who comes into my office and how I can be of help to that person for that hour. Each day I try to be better than the last. If I stop learning, or if I become indifferent to my work, I will lose my ability to help everyone who walks through my door. Though, I do like to think that my interest in fitness and sports has helped me to help others. I understand the movements those athletes are doing and the muscles involved in those movements. If I don’t know, then you can be sure I will be doing my research so that I do know!

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Women can be catty. Let’s just be frank. And even with males, not everyone can distinguish business from personal. In business, personal feelings cannot be used in leadership. This is a general statement for all industries. Leadership requires leading by example, not by dictating to others what you expect from them. You cannot expect more than what you are willing to give yourself. Now I am my own boss, so I do hold myself to a higher standard, and maybe one day I will have someone to lead, but for now, my leadership is by showing my clients that everything I preach to them I am willing to do myself. Proper nutrition, exercise routines, adequate hydration, rest, and recovery are all needed for a healthy lifestyle.
