Today we’d like to introduce you to Phyllis Smith.

Phyllis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
One day, I have decided I needed a change in my life for me and my daughter. I was a single parent who was struggling to make end meet. I decided to move up north and decided to take a chance and enroll into cosmetology school part-time for two years it wasn’t easy, I definitely had my ups and downs wanted to quit. I was fortunate to have people in my life to push me to finish. I first started out as a commission stylist for two years learning as much as possible from other mentors. When I felt that I were ready to move forward in my education I venture out on my own and became a independent hair stylist for several years. This journey has been triumphant and I would not trade it for anything. It’s a joy to wake up everyday and get to do what you are truly passionate about.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. There have been several challenges. My advice to those who are struggling or challenged. Keep the vision in front of you. Set reasonable goals and follow through.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Know what you are passionate about.
