Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Martin.

Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
A little about myself. I am the founder of FLEX Fitness. I grew up in the small town of Columbia, IL. I currently live in sunny Phoenix, AZ. There was a time when I used to be overweight, unhappy, and unhealthy. After 23 years of feeling this way, it was time for a change. I got into health and fitness to change my perspective and love my body! Fast-forward three years. I’ve made the long-lasting, lifestyle change and continue to pursue that each and every day. I hope to do the same for you!

As your Coach, I would love to work with you to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. I aim to target my client’s health and wellness in a way that works for them. I try to create a training environment that not only motivates but also empowers others to continually challenge themselves in a fun and rewarding way! We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest challenges that I have faced in starting my health and fitness journey is self-doubt. I thought success would happen overnight. But, no. That’s not how success happens. It’s extremely easy to get discouraged when something goes wrong or when you’re not growing as fast as you’d like. Self-doubt creeps in and you feel like giving up. There were many times I wanted to give up or throw in that towel. Being able to overcome that self-doubt is necessary. Having a good support system will help from family and friends who know your goals and support your plight. One of the best ways to deal with my self-doubt is to work on my goals. When I’m feeling discouraged, I go back and look at my goal sheet and it helps remind me that the work I do today is contributing to my life goals. By going back to my goals, it helps me to get one step closer and helps to reassure that I am, indeed, on the path to success.

FLEX Fitness has been a lifelong dream and goal of mine. I started FLEX because I wanted to help and encourage others in their health and fitness journey. It’s more than just about “getting fit.” It’s about a life-long change-physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The letters in FLEX spells out Fitness, Lifestyle, Endurance, and eXercise. When we work together, we are stronger. We build a business of accountability, encouragement, commitment, and hard work. I am proud of those that have grown into this new lifestyle change.

F-Fitness. Everyone must start somewhere. Your fitness journey begins with you starting at your own pace. It’s not about perfection, it’s about effort. And when you bring that effort every single day, that’s where the transformation happens; that’s how change occurs.

L-Lifestyle. This is a lifestyle change. It’s not a 1-week program that will magically change your life. That’s a quick fix and we are not about quick fixes, but we aim for the transformation of our minds and our bodies. It’s about getting up every day, choosing to be your best self, and continuing to pursue greatness. Only you can change your life. No one can do it for you.

E-Endurance. Endurance is the power to withstand pain and hardships. It’s the ability and strength to continue despite fatigue, pain, or stress. Just keep going.

X-eXercise. The hardest thing about exercise is to start doing it. Once you start doing it, the hardest thing to do is stop. Daily exercise helps build our metabolism, our strength, our endurance, our minds.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
One of the biggest barriers in female leadership today is being treated equally. Especially in the health and fitness industry, women can shy away from their dreams because it seems to be a man’s world. Strong women are empowering and strong. Go for what you want in your career and NEVER GIVE UP, even when the world is against you. Strive for the skills necessary to open the door to opportunities. Speak up. Be heard. Don’t listen to those negative comments that will arise in your path. Take control of your thoughts and your mind and replace them with positivity. Recite your positive affirmations about your goals and move forward.
