Life and Work with Neyda Melina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neyda Melina.

Neyda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My whole life I’ve known, I would end up somewhere in fashion. I have a fashion marketing degree and I’m a shoe buyer for women’s designer brands.

I’ve been an avid lover of blogs before they were even a thing. I always thought only journalists could start a blog, so I never imagined myself doing it. It wasn’t until people started encouraging it and my college professor advised me it would be a great way to put myself out there and practice my creative skills. I quickly realized I was very passionate about it. I became addicted to learning more and more about it from the technical aspects to understanding statistics. Eventually, it started bringing in collaboration opportunities and finally making some money. It opened my eyes to a business side of it and how inspired I am to bring more ideas to Truly, -Ney.

Has it been a smooth road?
Is anything ever a smooth road? My first biggest struggle was the name. I must’ve changed the name a million times. So much so even a week before the site was ready to launch I decided to change it again. My engineer wanted to kill me! (Sorry Rafa)

However, the biggest struggle comes after. For me, opening up to the world has been so hard and scary. What makes an influencer great is a true authenticity but it’s so hard to get that across over pro-cameras and filters. I’m shy by nature, so I’ve had to overcome some fears in this world. t’s so easy to feel discouraged when the market is so overly saturated. When I feel overwhelmed, I discontent and it’s so important to do, so from time to time. I remind myself that the reason I do this is that I love it and would do it regardless of money, free products or peoples judgments.

My biggest advice though is to cut out the negativity in your life. We’re already our own worst enemies we don’t need anyone or anything else bringing us down. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by positive and encouraging bloggers in the area. They’re an added bonus in the blogging world.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Truly, -Ney – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Like I said, fashion for me is day and night. I pride myself on keeping up with everything about fashion, not just the glam and the pretty. I like to keep my followers up to speed with it all too!

My latest additions to the blog have been travel and lifestyle. I think it’s incredibly important to be as open and genuine as you can so it’s been an experience for me to share that with my followers. I like to think the accessories game is my thing though. And shoes! Of course, shoes.

In my day job, I was recently promoted to associate buyer of designer brands so hopefully, I’ll be sharing more on that soon. Along with travels and even a non-profit business I’m currently very passionate about. Stay tuned!

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
We hear about issues like equal pay and sexual harassment in the workforce every day but I for one know this is a real thing. All I can say is I am happy that women are not holding back anymore. In my industry, it’s 70% women fitting those big roles but until now, I’d never seen women be so supportive of each other. In the past, it’s a lot of threat and competition but the more we fight together the more progress we can make into building true gender equality in the workforce. It’s history in the making and I’m so proud to be living in it.
