Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Torres.
Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began writing as a means of expressing myself and connecting with others through authenticity and vulnerability.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the major barriers to success is finding what it means to be authentic. So often, women are negatively influenced by societal pressure and limiting beliefs that are difficult to overcome. We are made to believe that there are predestined roles, such as wife, mother, or workaholic, that we must fill without question- we are told that there are boxes that we must fit inside. I encourage women to rewrite happily ever after and question what happiness looks like for them. Without first understanding what fulfills us as individuals, we will find the pursuit of happiness and success to be laborious.
Please tell us about your work.
My words are often brutal but filled with honesty, moving straight from my mouth to the paper with raw transparency. Focusing on relationships and self-advocacy, I draw from my clinical background as a therapist as well as my own personal experiences to connect with others facing similar issues. I believe that we are all feeling different shades of the human experience and we are all on a journey to find our truths. In addition to writing, I also work as a mentor to help guide others toward truly living rather than only existing.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
One of the most significant barriers that I find with regard to female leadership is fear. Women are sometimes taught to live inside of the lines and aspire to be only wives and mothers, but not leaders. There is a human desire to remain within our comfort zones because fear tells us that we will not succeed if we push the limits. Listening to our fears keeps us small. Success is not only conditional on talent or skill, but also dependent on our ability to be brave and push ourselves to do what we did not believe we were capable of. We must quiet our fears and trust that we are strong enough to navigate what comes our way.
