Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikela Torres.
Mikela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My career was “plan B.” I had been accepted into a design school in California to be closer to my dad. My senior year of high school he passed away. My mom lovingly told me to not let this be a setback. “I don’t care what you do- but you have to do something.” I went to beauty school as a way of getting me through college without having to work in a bar or restaurant as I am terrible at that! Ha! I went back to college for a year and enjoyed aspects of it but it was nothing like being in the salon with my guests. Building my business during the recession in 2007-2008 was a huge financial & emotional challenge but I kept pushing. I had a great deal of support and although I wish I would’ve had someone to guide me more or I wish I would’ve done things differently in the beginning, I have zero regrets! This industry is amazing! And having the tools we have now- there’s no excuse to fail. I’ve made some big changes in the last year including leaving my last salon after seven years.
Shortly after starting at the new salon, I signed up for the largest education platform I’ve been a part of- Big Money Stylist- the business, marketing and sales side of the extension education I went through. This platform has forever changed my career and my life. I also decided to retire from eyelash extensions after nine years. Here I am, 13 years into my career, re-building my clientele (to an extent). Recent months have been a little stressful but I know it will work out and I know I have so many resources! Things just take time. I love what I do and in the past year, I have met so many like-minded businesses, entrepreneurial women. It’s been a blessing! I love the salon I’m in and the women I work with!
Has it been a smooth road?
NO! Building my clientele was challenging to say the least. I spoke about having to rebuild a little now and even that is challenging. It’s difficult to put yourself out there on the socials if that’s not what you were originally taught. Ten years ago, FB and IG didn’t exist. It’s also a struggle to deal with people at times. You really need your empathic side. Advice? I would love to tell a younger me – set your business up right! Search for a great accountant that’s going to set you up for success when it comes to taxes and your money. And pay them well!!! Here are a few that have truly helped me no matter the business: You don’t know everything so don’t act like it- ask questions & listen! Stay humble but know your worth and what you’ve worked hard for. Stay consistent and reliable- return all messages! And be communicative.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Over the last 13 years, I’ve specialized in hair and eyelash extensions. I have enjoyed bridal hair and make-up and I’m certified in Microblading as well. I’ve enjoyed knowing so many parts of this industry. For the time being, I am focused on hair color and hair extensions – specifically Natural Beaded Row Extensions. I am proud of this brand and what they stand for. I believe what sets me apart is my education level, attention to detail, consistency, and client experience. Each of my guests knows they are getting the appointment they pay for.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I’ve had a few mentors in this industry, but honestly, the people I watch closely are the people who aren’t closed off to sharing business tips, marketing tips, and overall life tips. Some of these people are in the beauty industry but many aren’t.
