Life and Work with Mallory Murray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Murray.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mallory. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a naturopathic physician, but when my first son was born 2.5 years ago, my husband and I decided that the best choice for our family was to have me stay home while he was young. I love being a stay at home mom and when my son was six months old and started to eat solids I found that I really enjoyed the journey of food introduction with him. That’s really where my blog began. I wanted a way of sharing healthy kid-friendly recipes with a focus on keeping the sugars low and the healthy fats and proteins high. I love good food so I’m always trying to find ways to make my favorite foods a bit healthier and a bit more nutritious (yes, I’m one of those women that makes pasta sauce out of cauliflower, I promise you it’s delicious).

The blog slowly evolved because I found that I wanted to share more than just healthy recipes. I love sharing tips for keeping your family healthy with a more natural approach, so I talk a lot about different supplements, skin care and cleaning products that I use in my home, all the good “crunchy” info that health-conscious people enjoy hearing about. Anytime I find a product that I love I will share about it on either my blog or my Instagram so that my followers can get an educated and unbiased opinion about it. I documented my second pregnancy and the birth of my second son, who was born at a free-standing birth center, and I really enjoyed sharing my pregnancy and postpartum experience with my followers. I’ve had a lot of questions about why I chose a birth center birth as opposed to a hospital birth so I have a blog post dedicated to how I made that decision for my family. I also enjoy sharing mom life in general. There is so much judgment and pressure put on women to be “good” moms and wives, and I think that in reality, we all have good and bad days, so I keep it pretty real on my Instagram.

Has it been a smooth road?
We live in an age where everyone is on social media. Social media can be a fantastic way to share your knowledge, but I find it especially frustrating when I see larger accounts sharing the knowledge that is not accurate. This is especially true when it comes to sharing products that are “natural” or “healthy.” My goal is to grow my account so that I can share safe and accurate information about nutrition, pregnancy, and birth, keeping your family healthy, and clean living with as many people as possible.

I encourage everyone to do your own research and make sure that you are reading reputable sources before making your own decisions. Don’t just trust that because someone has a lot of followers they are going to be giving you correct information. If you are trying to grow your own social media account, be true to yourself and find other like-minded individuals to engage with. If you can share your knowledge with even one other person, then you are making a difference, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t have a large following.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Modern Lunchbox – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The Modern Lunchbox focuses on sharing healthy and nutritious recipes that the whole family can enjoy along with clean products that are safe for you and your family. I’m the one my friends and followers turn to if they want opinions on healthier options that are backed by research, thanks to my medical education. I also share a lot of what I’ve learned about pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and thrown in is a bit of mom life in general and tips for raising kids. I am proud to share a safe space with my friends and followers where they can get accurate information and fun tips and tricks for parenting.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Find like-minded individuals and engage with them. If they enjoy the information that you present, they are more likely to recommend you to others.
