Life and Work with Lauren Abraham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Abraham.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for writing, ever since I was young! My dream job was to become a magazine editor. In 2013, I attended Grand Canyon University and received my degree in Communications with a Minor in Marketing. While I was earning my degree, I worked for the university’s marketing department and was a copywriter for the school blog. This was when my eyes were really opened to the world of writing for the web — I learned about SEO and content creation, and I loved it!

During this time, I also was an intern for a local startup company in Phoenix called Bloguettes. I fell in love with the creative environment and knew it was the place for me! After graduating in December of 2016, I was hired on full-time as the company’s Editor. I oversee all of the content we post on our blog and social channels as well as work with our clients who come to us for our consulting services. I have grown so much in this role, and I can honestly say I learn something new every day. I am so grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve been given and for the people who have believed in me!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I think it does for everyone, my journey has definitely had its highs and lows! When I first started school, I had so many people tell me that my field of study was ‘too broad’ or that I was ‘taking the easy route.’ The major lesson I learned from that was… don’t listen to other people! If you’re passionate about something, go for it. At the end of the day, I believe everyone has a specific calling on their life and this is something that should be celebrated. It’s what makes each of us unique!

Another struggle I faced was balancing a busy work/school/internship schedule. Sometimes, I felt like my schedule was non-stop, but I was determined and knew I had to do all of these things to get to where I wanted to be. It all paid off in the end, but along the way, it was definitely a challenge and some people had a hard time understanding.

So, to sum it all up — don’t let anyone discourage you from doing what you’re passionate about. Even now, some people still don’t understand what I do (haha!), but that’s okay! If you love what you’re doing, that’s all that matters. Surround yourself with people who support your dream and encourage you. I’ve been blessed with amazing parents, a brother, and friends who have encouraged me every step of the way and I’m so thankful for them!

Please tell us about Bloguettes.
I’m the Editor at Bloguettes, a creative studio here in Phoenix! We provide tools and resources for entrepreneurs — including our blog, consulting services, and stock photo company, Stock That Rocks. In everything we do, our goal is to empower others and help them to build their brand. The services we offer include Brand Identity Development, Web Design, Brand Photography, Blog Strategy, and Social Media Strategy. All of our services are designed to go hand-and-hand and give our clients everything they need to pursue their dream and build their business. We want to be their right hand on the road to success!

As an editor, I’m responsible for all of the content that goes on our blog and I work with my interns to make this happen. The goal of our content is always to educate, empower, and provide solutions for our audience. I also get to work on a lot of client projects, which I love! I help clients to create their brand strategy, write their website copy, and I also play a role in our blogging and social media services.

As a company, I am most proud of our ability to work together. We’re a small team, and we all realize that there is NO way we could make this happen without the skills and talents each of us brings to the table. We’re also an all-female company, which is something that makes us unique. I consider my coworker’s friends and we are each other’s biggest cheerleaders! I’m thankful I get to work in an office with such inspiring, creative women.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Yes! Networking is so important. While I was at GCU, I was part of the Communications Honor Society. I was on the officer team as club secretary, and throughout the semester we would put on various events. One of the other officer’s name was Paige and she was a year older than me. At one of our events, I was talking with her and asking her about her job, and she told me she was working as a digital copywriter for the blog and that they were looking for a replacement because she was graduating. I told her I was very interested, and she ended up recommending me and I got the job! One opportunity led to another, which is how I got to where I am today.

So, my advice when it comes to networking is to have genuine conversations with people. Learn about what they’re passionate about, share what you’re passionate about, and take the time to get to know them. It’s not necessarily about how many people you know… it’s about how much you invest in the relationships you have. I think so many people get into the mindset that networking is just about how many people you can give your business cards to… but that’s not the case! Remember that relationships are a two-way street and you have to give in order to receive. Don’t always go about it with a hidden agenda — just focus on getting to know others and building community!
