Life and Work with Kisha Gulley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha Gulley.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a flight attendant for 13 years. I began dating one of my best friends who happened to be a pilot. After we got married and had kids, we decided that we didn’t want anyone else raising our kid’s because we would both be gone. So, I decided to stop flying to become a stay at home mom. After having our first son, I had postpartum depression. I felt alone and isolated. I decided to start sharing my story because I really didn’t have anyone to talk to about it. So much had changed for me from traveling all over the world to now sitting at home married and depressed. I started my blog “The Kisha Project” to share my journey. As I started writing and sharing, I realized in order to share these experiences I had to do so from my own Afro-Latina point of view.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, I did. Initially, when I started blogging we lived in Dallas. I joined a few groups on Facebook to network and interact with other Dallas area bloggers. One particular group I joined was for Latinas. However, I noticed I didn’t feel represented at all. They would brag about unity and being inclusive of all Latinas, but they never posted or published anything that included Latinas of color. This is how it had been most of my life. That’s why I knew I had to keep getting our stories out there. My advice for any other women who don’t feel like they have a voice out here is let that be your motivation to work even harder. You never know who else is watching, you could be motivating someone else just like you.

Please tell us about The Kisha Project.
I am currently working on being more present in the community. Especially for other black Latinas. Since I have been to Phoenix, I haven’t found any other Afro-Latinas. However, I would love to work more with some of the other Latinas here and be a representation of the Afro-Latino community.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
There is enough room for everyone!! Sometimes, it feels like it’s a competition with other bloggers/influencers but it’s not. We can all work together. Your contribution could be so important so don’t get discouraged.
