Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Taylor.
Kathy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
40 years ago in a small town in Southern Oregon, a paint brush was placed in my hand. It may sound silly but at that moment, I knew I was supposed to paint! I was not born an artist but I felt the call when the time was right. After much study and many setbacks, I began to create work that could be exhibited in galleries. A move to Phoenix in 1984 had a huge impact on my work as an artist as well as my creative spirit. I was still a working artist but my focus shifted to include teaching. The combination of my experiences as a struggling artist and much personal growth helped me to create my Creative Development classes. As the classes grew in size, it seemed only natural for me to open my own teaching studio. In 2005, I founded Studio 6020 – Center For Creative Development where I continue to teach and mentor budding artists as they find their own artistic voices.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would not say it has been a smooth road. The artistic journey, in particular, is not an easy path. The advice I would like to give to young creatives is what a professor once gave to me.
“It’s not always the people with talent that make it, but the ones that can stick it out through the ups and downs.”
You may have to change course many times in your life but keep your dreams alive!
Please tell us about Studio 6020 – Center For Creative Development.
I have been a fine art painter for the past 40 years and love creating new work for clients. galleries and art exhibitions. I am most known for the symbolism in my paintings which continues to evolve and change. Because of the focused nature of painting, my work is my meditation which has to lead to personal and spiritual development. These experiences have nurtured a unique skill which allows me to “hold space” for another artist so they can “reconnect” with their creative spirit. This, I believe, is what sets my teaching studio apart from other art studios and classes.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Allow yourself time each day to focus on your dreams and passions. Keep them alive in your mind’s eye and they will appear in the physical world at that right time. The stronger the passion the faster your dreams will appear.
