Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Kendrick.
Joy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was dared to go without meat for a week, so I upped it by going without meat for a month. When the month was over, I ate some bacon, I immediately became sick and decided to cut meat out of my diet within a year. I felt the difference and as a model, it changed my life. I felt lighter, could move quicker, and hardly if ever felt sluggish after eating. I constantly was asked what, where and how do I eat since I removed meat from my diet, so I decided to start my blog, The Food of Joy. The blog, which is on Instagram provides recipes, information vegan or vegetarian friendly restaurants and food-related memes. Most recently, I decided to become a certified health coach, to help my followers who are interested in eating healthy and/or looking for assistance with their current eating habits.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth is a matter of perspective and yes, I’ve had some struggles. For years, even before I was a model, I dealt with eating disorders and I finally opened up about it on my YouTube channel, The Food of Joy. Long story short, while at a big modeling event, I passed out, I hadn’t eaten for a day or so. I had kept my eating disorders a secret from my family, friends and even my boyfriend at the time. I felt like a hypocrite, for having a food blog, bragging about the benefits of eating healthy all the while throwing up the food I ate or starving myself. The advice I would give other women is to celebrate you, love you, adore you, and it doesn’t always have to be something big. It’s okay to smart small, whether it’s the color of your eyes, how well you dress, your eyebrows, girl just love you!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I love music (I have a public playlist on my vlog of some favorites and a few I star in), I’m always on Instagram and Twitter but I could drop all of that for a great book. The book ‘Who Moved My Cheese’, is a book I think everyone should read and I listen to Lisa Nichols, that’s my girl!
